I've added this to the challenge and I know a few won't read or aren't on the 2017 challenge so I'll leave it here .

Lately there seems to be a campaign of gambling adverts offering various bonuses etc . No matter how many I clicked are irrelevant they still kept coming to the point I was thinking conspiracy lol honestly every 3 posts appeared another slot or football ad anyhow i searched far and wide for answers and came up with this .

The target audience for said adverts are 18/ 70 so first off I changed my birth year to as far back as possible 1917 , then i changed my current city to Dubai why? Because Dubai is non gambling . Which in turn takes me out of the ad campaigns criterial thus ending the spam ads ,

Hopefully it will be of help to some even one person it's worth sharing for

Deano

Hi DeanO,

Thank you for posting this. Other users may find this helpful, too. It could also be worth looking into the settings for your facebook account as you can determine your "ad preferences" there. For example, should you find "gambling" ads amongst the list of ads which you have previously interacted with or which are popping up due to your internet usage, you can x them off your list. While this may be not as comprehensive as blocking them, it can still go a long way in ensuring that you have less exposure.

Kind wishes

Gabriele

I'm not on FB but I do have an ad blocker. I don't know if it would work on FB but it might be worth investigating.

Thanks Lethe I do have ad away unfortunately it doesn't work on the Facebook app . They only work if you go through on their browser. But I've had the same result as Oldham and have not had any since I changed the age and location settings.

What happens in recovery is that you become calm and indifferent to the advertising.

For me it was in town and I dont really glance in the windows now. I was stood eating chips and gravy and there was a bookies (I am self excluded from) facing me.

I was thinking more about the pigeons wanting a chip. Im not wary or scared of the place. For a fleeting moment I think how sad it is that people go in there. I feel no urges and the only time I think about gambling is when Im on here trying to help. I am not using this site to combat urges. I simply like the focus and some routine of clicking on and trying to help.

So Im not sure we can totally avoid the advertising but with a good recovery we become immune to it. People cant stop using social media because a few ads pop up. I have an ad blocker but I dont know what it blocks really. I dont use facebook and I dont see many ads online so the blocker must be doing a good job.

I remain calm and indifferent. I cant ban gambling so I deal with my recovery. I agree that the amount of advertising is shameful. From my point of view its advertising a bottle full of nothing...hot air....dreams. Its no wonder people get addicted and I know why people get addicted.

The advertising isnt going away anytime soon but it becomes easier with time to casually dismiss it

Best wishes to everyone on the forum
