My 25yr old brother in law has admitted to having a gambling addiction. He was still living with his father, but after various scams and stealing considerable amounts of money from him, he has been kicked out of the family home and says that he is living in his car and begging food from friends.

I think I would like to help him (along with my partner), but I am scared about bringing him home and having money and/or goods stolen from us.

Is there any place where he can receive residential treatment?

He is now in Spain (I am also spanish), but I would be happy for him to come to UK and fund his treatment (he is also fluent in english)

Thanks a lot to all and best wishes for the recovery of you roved ones!

Hello there,

I am sorry to hear that you brother in law is struggling with a gambling addiction and it sounds that this is affecting the whole family.

It would not be a good idea to try and rescue him and bring them to your home but point out to him where he can get help, as he probably needs professional help. There is free residential treatment in the UK but only for UK residents.

If he is Spanish and lives in Spain, it would be better to find out what support there is in Spain for gambling addiction or if there are any private clinics / professionals that can help.

However, if you or your partner are a UK residents and you feel this is affecting you personally, you can access support through GamCare.

I hope that helps.

Best wishes
