Surprised myself that i have managed to stop for 10 days now! The thoughts and cravings have stopped for the time being but i know they will soon come again at some point when i least expect it! i do miss the buzz and excitement of it but trying to keep myself busy, only carrying money i need is really helping! Nobody should feel ashamed and embarrassed by being a gambling addict. It is an illness and we are all here to help each other. If there is one bit of advice i could give i would be talk to friends and family, it will be one of the hardest things you will ever do but it is impossible on your own. You will only stop if you are willing to stop.
When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.
Ive just posted as a newbie and just read your comments. Really gives me hope, wise words indeed. And youre so right, its the buzz of "oh maybe the next click". I DO feel ashamed and embarrased but I am so encouraged by people like you and your explanation hit the nail on the head for me, thanks matey
Hi Seany26,
Just wanted to say well done for the time off you've had from gambling! You show some good insight in your post, as well as a good amount of determination. I like that you've been open about your problem with your friends and family; research has shown, in fact, that people who are more open with people around them tend to do better in recovery than those who aren't, as it gives you more accountability.
You're also right about not needing to feel ashamed about being a gambling addict. Many people we interact with on a daily basis have problems with one thing or another that we never know about. You're just a human being like the rest of us, and it's okay to have problems from time to time. You've recognized what you need to work on, and that's a strength. Yes, it's hard to always be vigilant about not placing a bet, but the more balance you put into your life the easier that will get. With time and perseverance, your life can be significantly more enjoyable and peaceful.
Thanks for your post, and I hope things continue to go well for you.
Travis
