Hi mate

First step in the right direction is coming on here sand admitting it's a problem.

It's so easy to gamble so trying to stop is tough as nails, I'm only on day 6 clean but already I feel a little better about myself.

Just keep thinking about what gambling destroys.

I've been gambling ten years and I have a good job and good pay, but have little to show for it.

Hate to imagine how much I've lost, doing it for me and my family now, things have to change and this is the starting place so good luck and stay strong

Andy

Hi cry for help - Well done for joining us here.

You'll find so much support and encouragement. You mentioned betting shops and online gambling - have you put in place barriers to prevent you from physically gambling? i.e. self-exclusion from shops and also from online casinos. There are also several blocking programs such as K9, GamBlok and TXNoGam which will prevent you from accessing such sites.

Best wishes for the journey.

Joanna

Hi there

As someone who has just had to end my 8 year relationship as my partner was gambling so much I respect you for coming on here and seeking help before it all goes too far.

You have mentioned you have a wife and kids, please please do it for them. I've lost my family unit and now my kids have a separate mum and dad, please don't let that happen to you.

I wish you all the luck with this. Gambling is a lose lose situation however you look at it. My ex has not only lost so much money, he's lost his home, family and self respect. It's so so sad! Be positive and again well done for seeking help off your own accord. Life's too short to ruin it yourself!

Take care...

Hi there cry for help. I think you have probably taken the biggest step in admitting you have a problem in the first place. I am a recovering alcoholic of 20-odd years and know denial is one of the biggest blocks to recovery. Today is my first day of recovery from gambling addiction and I too am an educated professional ... it makes me feel more ashamed of myself because I am an intelligent person and start thinking "I should know better". Addiction has no respect for how intelligent you are. It is like a horrible disease, the symptoms of which eat away at a person's self respect and breaks down families unless it goes into remission ... and I don't think there's any cure as such, which is why I say remission. And only we can stop it.

Hopefully with the help of others in this forum we will be able to find the support needed to end the misery it is causing. Good luck to you. Wishing you well ... one day at a time ...
