Hi
just joined, trying to leave my gambling past behind me, I can’t believe the amount I’ve lost, how I got that trapped. First step here

Hello.
Would you be able to tell a bit more of your story? One of the ways that people can help each other is from identifying with others with the same issues.Â
I look forward to reading more of your story.
Chris.
Hi ChrisÂ
thanks for the replyÂ
I’ve gambled on and off for 10 years , this latest lapse has lasted around 9 months. It became all consuming and I think I’ve lost around 50k through savings and loans . I now have 36k to pay back . I’m also a struggling alcoholic , trying to stay sober . The 2 issues crossed over and have really come to a head. My girlfriend found me in a state after another full day drinking , 5k daily loss, and it finally came flowing out in a emotional and drunken confession. I’m glad in one way, and I haven’t gambled in 3 weeks. I’m still worried about being alone , and I’m trying to come to terms with the monthly repayments I lose from my monthly pay. I promised that I would take more steps this time to make sure it’s the last and now  here via GamCare counselling.Â
Hi JP,
Thanks for sharing that. I know a few people who have a cross addiction or find they gamble out of hand after drinking. It's doubly hard for you but it can be addressed.
I don't know if you've gone to AA yet but I'd suggest AA as well as GA meetings once the lockdown is over. As much as there are online meetings they don't compare to the real thing. It's only for a short while longer so hang in there.
I'm pleased for you that it's finally out, however it came out, as now you can move forward.
Hopefully the Gamcare counselling works and remember you can always pick up the phone to the Gamcare advisers or the GA helpline, although the GA one is more to guide you to a meeting, whereas the Gamcare ones can chat to you. Just talking can help.
It is easy for me to say don't worry about the debts, but I mean don't worry about the amount of the time to pay them back. Make sure you deal with them and arrange a repayment that is affordable, or if there are lots together there are companies like pay plan who can help set up a repayment scheme.
It can all be okay. Try and take things one day at a time. Just get through today without a bet or a drink.
Lomg term you will need to do more than just abstain from drinking and gambling but for now, for three months, just get a clear head by not doing those two things. If you take drugs as well then it's a good idea to put that down too.
Start a diary for yourself. Not a lot will happen day in day out but you will find your mind starts to clear and maybe share about how you are feeling.Â
All the best to you and any questions please ask.
Chris.
