I’m struggling with my mental health,
My brain is all a fuzz,
I even turned to gambling,
Just to get a buzz.
Â
My thoughts go into darkness,
Like a mist comes over my eyes,
I buried my head into the sand
And started telling lies.
Â
I admitted I have a problem
To the people I hold dear
Which is the first step to recovery
To help me see more clear
Â
Writing and poetry takes my mind
Off the addiction
It helps me focus on something else
Other than that demon
Â
The dreams I have are dark and dreary
My brain just won’t shut off
Addiction is an awful thing
Just wish that I could stop!
Â
I’m glad I’ve taken the first step
To open up and talk
and hopefully in the future
My life won’t be so dark
Â
So this is the start of my journey
For brighter days ahead
My advice to other people
Don’t get inside your head
Â
Mental health is not a joke
Addiction isn’t either
Seek the help and open up
Talking makes life easier
Hi Andrea and thank you for your honest and insightful poem you have shared a lot of your experiences that displays your courage and generosity.Â
Addiction is a very difficult mindset to move away from and it does take bravery and being able to admit the areas we struggle in and what those struggles look like which you have been gracious to share.
I agree that it is a fundamental part of recovery and getting well to talk about how you feel as isolation is what makes addiction behaviour and the demons thrive but when you can ask for what you need then at some point that need will be met and change can happen.
Also, you share that you are struggling with your mental health and I would encourage you to speak with your G.P. if you have not already done so.
You may want to consider accessing 121 support if you are not already receiving any so you can have a space to explore your thoughts emotions and experiences with support and receive information that will give you further insight and knowledge on your recovery journey.
You can access 121 support via the 24 hour helpline Advisor on 0808 802 0133 also there are other services online if you prefer via this link GamCare - The leading provider of support for anyone affected by problem gambling in Great Britain
There is also support available to the people you 'hold dear' should they want to have a space to understand and explore their own thoughts and feelings via GamCare Family and Friends service that can be accessed via the 24 hour helpline Advisor or the Online live chatroom. Hi Andrea, well done on stopping 🙂 what was it that made you finally stop? You should be proud
@lx0z7b93qs I got myself into debt and couldn’t hide it any longer I’m so glad I came clean to my husband and my family now I’m getting the help and support I need
Opening up and being honest is the bravest thing to do, you should feel really proud of yourself for taking that step. Admission is the hardest part as you know it means it’s over, but it gets so much easier from now on. Now you can finally spend more time not glued to your phone, sleeping better and feeling less anxious. Well doneÂ
