I had gambled 2500 of the 2800 in my account, loss after loss. Felt completely devastated as it was now 5 weeks till payday and all my plans downs the drain. Couldn't be bothered to be at work, made a excuse to go home. Went back to the bookies with the remaining 300 and somehow I managed to get it all back. Promised myself I'd never do this again to myself for the 500000th time. Completely grateful and so sure this was never going to be me again.
By 6pm, I'd gambled it all away again. Nobody in this world has probably been given the chances I have to fix this problem by friends, family and just general life opportunities.
I know it's possible to stop, I see it in people on this forum but it's path I just can't seem to find.
The question you have to ask yourself is do you really want to stop? Not because of your family/friends or because of your money situation but because you actually don't want to gamble anymore.
Hello Judderman,
Well done for opening up about your slip.
It is good that the forum has provided you with evidence for the possibility of recovery. At the same time, you have struggled to progress with your own recovery, and you feel very demoralised when you overspend on gambling .
When people regularly use support for their recovery, (For example by attending weekly counselling appointments, GA meetings, updating their GamCare forum recovery diary, and so on), they are helping themselves to keep recovery on their agenda.
If you’re struggling to find your way into recovery, please feel welcome to use more of GamCare’s services. If you’d like a free counselling appointment, you can call the GamCare Freephone 0808 8020 133 or Netline to speak with an adviser who will be able to let you know more about your local service.
Take care,
Adam.
Hi Judderman
Am in precisely the same position, gets into our brains this month we will win big and then I'll stop!!!!
Hope your thinking of stopping for you and that will help all the other reasons to stop.
GOOD LUCK
Hi Judderman
I know exactly how you feel. I know what it's like to be broke immediately after I've been paid and the gut-wrenching feeling as you walk out of the bookies, knowing that if you hadn't gone in there in the first place, you wouldn't have to make up lies to explain why you have no money for the rest of the month.
You need to break the cycle. You could start by handing over your money to your wife/girlfriend. I've had to do this after coming clean about my compulsion to gamble. You will feel like a kid asking for pocket money but gamblers can never carry money around with them.
You have a problem and it isn't going to get better unless you make it better for yourself.
Find out where your nearest GA meetings are and give them a go. I am a compulsive gambler and it's been 23 days since my last bet. I will always be a compulsive gambler and will always have to work hard each and every day to make sure that I am not compelled to gamble.
Please get help.
