Why do we gamble?

I asked my self this question as I was playing black jack and I never felt any joy from winning/losing. The euphoria that one feels when they get there number or cards is just not there anymore although I always go back. Is it the thrill of losing/winning? Is it financial? To be honest I prefer losing my money and then winning it back when I get my cards such as a top 3 on blackjack. My gambling has reached new highs and it has really scared me.

Anyway I got a call from the casino today to invite me although I immediately shouted the person down and asked to never contact me again. But I am getting that urge despite having lost 7.5k last Thursday. The fact that I got to 12.5k has not really helped matters as I keep thinking "what if". What if I stopped at that point and used that money to try and win back the 53k i lost last month...Its driving me crazy 🙁 I dont want to gamble again but I fear the mental aspect of gambling is just so powerful that it will be to hard to resist.

Pay day in 2 weeks will be the big test !

Hi Problem Gambler. What if you did gamble again and win back the 7,500? (It could happen) What if you did gamble that back up to 12,500 again? (It could happen) What if you did gamble that back up to the 53,000 you lost last month? (It could happen) What if you did win back another 50,000 you lost last year or some other time? (It could happen) What if you did win back everything you ever lost and another 200,000 on top? (It could happen) Would you then stop and never gamble another penny and live happily ever after? What are the odds for the above winning streak to take place? How many times have you gambled on pay day and lost the lot? Why do you find yourself on a website for people who want to stop gambling? Why is your username "Problem Gambler" and not "Most successful gambler in the world ever whose every obstacle can be overcome by the turn of a few cards" (Maybe because it wouldn't fit but more likely because it's not true)

What if you stopped gambling? (It could happen) What if you found the spare time useful to do that hobby you always wanted to do? (It could happpen) What if you were able to help others to stop ruining their lives on gambling? (It could happen) What if you never donated another penny to an already hugely rich gambling company? (It could happen) What if you were able to donate 5 quid a week to a charity to buy a mosquito net or a bag of rice to save someones life? (It could happen)

Which of those ifs, buts or maybes would you be most proud of yourself for doing?

Why do we gamble you ask? I don't know, I have yet to meet the person who can answer that question for everyone. Trying to find out why you gamble will be hard enough mate so concentrate on that one for now. Greed/Illness/Lack of God/Weakness/Self Indulgence/Lack of morals/Thick as a whale omlette/Self hate/Low self esteem/Anxiety/Evil mind control/Destiny/Damnation/Aliens/Sod all else to do? --------- Delete as appropriate and all the best.

Hi Problem Gambler

Do you mind if I ask you a couple of things? Really trying to answer the above title to this post myself, not as a gambler, but wife of gambler. You say you lost 53K in one night. How did you have that much money to gamble with? Was it actually your own money you were using as in savings? I'm sorry if it's a dumb question but I am trying to work out how you could have that much to gamble with. I wonder if there was any point at which you thought it was insane or is it a type of red mist that pushes you on? Can you think of one situation which might have occurred during that spree to make you stop.

My husband was in a casino a few years back. At the time we were living apart (only 5 miles apart) and our young son aged around 8 at the time was taken ill. Poorly enough for an ambulance to be called due to a suspicion of meningitis. I called my husband at the casino to explain. The ambulance arrived and he was taken to hospital. My husband did not arrive. He stayed in the casino. He did not arrive at the hospital and nor did he arrive at our home when he was discharged in the early hours of the morning. Is that normal for an addict?

Im sorry I've ended up asking advice on your post rather than giving it. I think you are brave to come here, you can recover from this. The diaries are a great place, starting your own and reading others.

Good luck to you.

Hi there, and no need to apologise as I am quite happy to assist if I can. In relation to how I came about with 53k? Well it is a combination of savings and the purchase/sell of bitcoins. What could have prevented me from continuing? Well maybe if someone from work saw me or I got a call from my mum who despises me gambling although I was just passing by that time and had no intentions of gambling. It was an impulsive decision which I later came to regret. After losing 14 k at two different casinos I went home and played online where I lost the rest of my money. You see I panicked and fell for the trick, which is what gambling does to you.

Regarding your husband, I would say he is not in control at this point, he has a powerful addiction that is taking over his better judgement and I can understand how this must be unbearably difficult for you to understand. Gambling is the single most addictive dependency I have ever come across and your husband is a victim of this industry that reaps from the misery of others.

That is not to say your husband is not at fault here, he has a choice. We all really have a choice it just depends how bad he wants it. This forum really helps and I would urge him to seek professional assistance as well as talk to people like my self who are battling this wicked disease.

Great post mate and very thought provoking. The Psychology behind gambling is really something that needs to be researched and as an addict its important to understand this in order to recover.
