This is day one of my new life. I have had enough of dedicating my life to gambling.
I've taken 3 major steps today. Signed up for counselling, excluded myself from every betting website and gave someone close my online bank details so they can see what I'm up to.
I need some advice on how to deal with the downtime. The time where you are on your own and just fancy a punt. Times where you need something to occupy the time.
I have hobby's, but I've become accustomed to betting WHILE doing these.
Just need to battle the restlessness if people know what I mean.
Thanks.
Hi In a Rut,
Thanks for your posts, and I hope you're finding the forum to be a supportive place. Those are excellent steps you've taken already, and I'm sure they're going to help. Remember that as long as you have the desire to quit, you've eventually get there.
Sometimes having that patience can be one of the hardest things, though, and dealing with the restlessness from not betting can be one of the biggest challenges. It's often hard to think of ways to fill that time that usually would be spent gambling. The restlessness is something that will get better and easier to manage over time, so in the meantime you've got to use whatever distraction techniques you can think of to keep yourself abstinent. That's great if you already have some hobbies, but maybe acquiring some new ones would be something to look into? It's pretty hard to be placing bets whilst swimming, cycling, hiking, classes at the gym, etc. Do whatever you can to get more balance into your life, and the betting will get less and less interesting. Also remember that just because an urge is there, doesn't mean you have to act on it. Sometimes learning to just sit with that urge and feel it fade over time can be really useful.
I'm sure that other folks can give you more ideas, but hopefully this can be a start.
Hang in there, and well done so far.
Travis
