I have just told my dad about my recurring gambling problem which had resulting in massive debt. And now I feel awful for dragging other people Into my problems and loading them with the burden of my problem. It is a horrible atmosphere I feel like running away from it all.

Hi feeling low

I know it may not feel like it now but opening up was is the best way to start beating gambling. I've had to tell my family over and over again after when I've messed up but last year I had to open up to been nearly 40 grand in debt. Luckily some how they didn't turn there back on me, yes the atmosphere was horrible, yes it was hard to see what I had put them through but if it wasn't for them I wouldn't got to where I am today 7 month clean, and the debt is still there but it's going slowly but surely.

If you think you can just stop and solve this problem by yourself, you are kidding yourself. You need family round you as a support system. Let your dad look after your money to stop you getting tempted or wasting it.

This will show your dad your want to stop, go get help, go to the meetings, set up a dairy on here. It will take time but proving to your dad that you don't want to be a gambler, if he can see the signs that you are trying to stop it, the atmosphere will go.

Even tho I don't feel it of myself (because I just feel it's something I shouldn't of done in first place) but my family feel like me stopping gambling is my proudest achievement and yours can to if your willing and determined to beat it.

Good luck

Thanks snowbelle that is really quite helpful... can I ask how you tackled your debt( don't worry if you don't want to speak about that) I am in 23k debt and the thought is sickening.

We've not even told my mum yet so the wrath will start all over

Most of mine was loans that I blew on gambling, so still paying them off monthly and will be for next 3year. I had about 8grand on credit card and overdrafts, which luckily my family helped me out with and them paying them back now with no interest.

Once you stop gambling you'll be surprised how far you money actually goes.

I know that fear of telling someone but once the wrath is out the way, you can start on re building trust and relationships.

Yes, its horrible when you have to make the "big confession". Having said that, it can also be something of a relief especially when you knew that you have to do it one day anyway and don't have to deceive people anymore.

To deal with your debt, the best places to contact are organisations such as Step Change and Payplan who help set up Debt Management Plans with your creditors and you can pay back what you can afford each month. It can be daunting at first but I have paid off nearly 27K and my debt is just about cleared so it can be done.
