Hello All,

Ive been a problem gambler since i was 17 (now 27) and i have lost alot of money in that period of time, i dont think figures are important as every one has different amounts at their disposal.

I have a real love for horce racing and its causing me real issues now in terms of gambling. I run a small business and i spend all day watching horse racing rather then trying to push my business as i should. Not only am i losing my money im also losing business by not working and gambling.

Like alot of you im guessing i have tried to quit multiple times before and failed, but im back with a renewed sense of purpose and im really going to nail it this time. Ive applied for counselling through gamcare which i hope will help.

If anyone has any tips (apart from the obvious once eg banning yourself) it would be greatly appreciated! Ive set up a little sticky note on my computer entitled day 1 - 07/08/18 and im going to give it a little tick once the day is done and keep counting!

All comments and help are really appreciated.

Thank you

Well done on taking the first step and trying to beat this illness. I too had a love of the horses which cost me over twenty years vast amounts of money and much much more! For me the first step is admitting I had a problem and seeking help. Step two self exclusion using Gamstop and the national self exclusion helpline. Step three to avoid buying newspapers, reading race form, knowledge of meetings need to be avoided etc. Step four attend GA once a week. Step five get help managing my finances off someone I trust.

No matter how great and enjoyable horse racing seems we have to admit it’s cost us a lot and caused so many problems. We don’t need it in our lives, we are better leaving it in the past and focusing on beating this one day at a time!
