Doesn't matter what anyone else sees my friend it only matters what you see. You do not need others to allow you to shine, you do that for you, nobody else.
My advice to you, learn to reject the shame. Shame is an overwhelming sense that who you are isn't good enough. Realise that you are good enough Stephen, imperfections are part of being human. You are not a "sad pathetic gambler", you are a man who is breaking free and changing his life for the better.
