Hi my name is Drew I am 27 years old and I have been a gambling addict for about 8 years. I have gambled my whole life but it only became a real problem when I moved out on my own and lived within walking distance of a casino. I have been in recovery for roughly 3 years I had attending GA meeting regularly throughout as well as counselling. On October 5th, 2013 I reached my 2 years of clean time and it was a big achievement. However in the end of October I ended a 4 year relationship with my spouse whom I had just bought a home with. This triggered many old memories of my escaping and I gave in to some online gambling on November 17th, I was completely devastated to ruin my 2 years of clean time and really fought lots of urges right up until Christmas, but I didn't gamble again in that time frame. The holidays were a very tough time as it was my first being single in a long time. I have so much time alone as I work shiftwork. My job pay very well but I cannot stop slipping, I think since January 1st I have had 4 slips and lost around $4000 USD. I cannot afford to be doing this as I have my mortgage commitment and have 35,000 in other debts mostly from my gambling. I need to stop or I am worried my life will be full of pain and misery. I have an amazing family and friends who support me but I am my own worst enemy. I am really hoping I am able to do it this time. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Hi Drew

I think trying to beat this addiction is probably the wrong way yo go about it. I don't think I can ever beat it I just respect it to a certain degree, You have spent time in counselling and I'm sure you have a wealth of artillery to combat your demons. If you know your triggers for gambling you can make sure when these arise that you are in a safe environment. Keeping a diary is a good place to start but maybe contacting your counsellor might be a way forward!

Take care
