Hi,

I have come on this forum to finally admit defeat. I have been gambling on and off for the last 15 years online and in casinos. I gamble predominately on black jack. I have won and lost over the years but like every CG I have lost far more than what I had won. The winnings are only tease to lure you back in again to lose.

After losing a huge some of money in the casino, money which I could not afford to lose, I have finally come on this forum to reflect defeat. 'The house always wins'. Wherever it's 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 years, 20 years, they will eventually get the better of you.

I feel disgusted, sad and angry. I have a family to think of, wife and kids. Today is day one. Just for today I will not gamble. The journey and recovery begins....

Hi Daniel

Welcome to the forum. You have done the first thing in admitting that you have a problem with gambling. You need to put as many blocks in place such as installing software onto your devices and self excluding from every site and casino. Also handing your finances over to your wife and getting support. Is your wife aware of your addiction? Honesty really is the best policy and it maybe difficult to start with but she maybe able to help and support. Have you thought about setting up a diary in the Recovery diaries section of the forum? You will find lots more help and support in there and you can track your progress. I would suggest looking in to GA meetings in your area as they can be really useful to talk to people face to face that are/have suffered the same as you.

It will be a long slow journey but tiny steps taking one day at a time and the WANT to do it you will succeed.

Take care.

Hi Daniel16 ,

Well done for getting in touch, and thanks for your post.

I think you’ve taken the necessary step to help yourself by coming to us, and not giving up regarding the losses you’ve made.

We’re aware it’s hard work when trying to give up gambling; most people need professional help and support to overcome it, and that is why Gamcare is ready to help and support in various ways.

Making efforts to stop after 15 years of gambling and with heavy losses, I think, is a step in the right direction.

I suggest that you contact our free phone Helpline on: 0808 8020 133, and speak to one of our advisers for further help and support. Pls. also note that our lines are opened every day from 8.00am to midnight.

I’m not sure if you’ve tried counselling before but, in case you think counselling would help you to stop, then please try and contact one of our advisers for a referral. An adviser can refer you to 12 sessions of free counselling, and nearest to where you live. Counselling would help you to explore different areas of your life, to make sense of what is going on with you, and also to look out for any underlying issues for your gambling.

Meanwhile, continue to read from our forum, and post as often as you can, as it helps to share your concerns about your gambling problem. By sharing, fellow forum members would be able to give you more support in terms of strategies that can help you to overcome your problematic gambling.

Maybe, you would also like to look up for a GA meeting in your local area for additional support, and to distract yourself from gambling.

Perhaps you may like to consider joining our live chat which is held every day from 8.00pm to 9.00pm too.

It’s advisable to take it one step at a time, and to be patient with yourself. The journey to recovery differs for everyone but, with determination and effort, you’ll hopefully reach the light at the end of the tunnel.

Best wishes,

Beatrice
