Hi Caddy,

Thanks for posting, and I'm glad you've got a counselling session lined up. It sounds like you're a bit nervous about it, and really hoping it will work for you. What I can say is that you'll tend to get out of counselling what you put into it. Research has also shown that counselling tends to be what helps gamblers the most, and the more you engage in it, the better your recovery will be. If you use Gambler's Anonymous in conjunction with counselling, then the recovery can be even stronger.

It's certainly not going to be an easy process, and you'll have to have patience with yourself. Hopefully there won't be any lapses with gambling, but if there are, just use those experiences to learn what you can do more effectively to stay abstinent. Attend counselling as much as you can, and address things as they come up.

Remember that as long as you have the desire to quit gambling, if you stay determined and keep trying, eventually you'll get there. Keep reminding yourself that gambling is just one little thing in the world that doesn't work out for you. There are many other things that do, and are healthier for you.

Hope this helps, and well done for taking some good steps already.

Travis

Great reply Travis, and Caddie I also can say it works, it defineatley helped me. I had relapsed after being out of counselling and Im going back today, just let your feelings out, try to work out why we do this, and what ways to stop.

Hi Caddy,

I have had 8 sessions of counselling late last year. I guess it depends on how you get on with the person. Mine was great, a sort of mother figure really. I cried my eyes out on the first and 2nd session but after that it was a relaxing chat.

Did it help? I don't really know! For me it was triggered by my confession to my partner and I felt I had to go to show her I was sincere. To be honest it was her support and understanding that was the key factor in my stopping.

Prepare for tears (if you're soft like me). But ultimately relief - it's great to unburden - especially to someone who you don't know and will not judge you.

Embrace it! You might cringe at some of the stuff you discuss but I found it useful.

Best of Luck

Paul
