Evening all.

After self evaluating and listening to comments from others I feel like I have a problem with gambling. Started when I was 18. I would meet my dad down the pub and he would nip into the bookies next door and I would go watch him and then I started putting ВЈ1 football bets hoping to win thousands. Sadly it never happened. I'm now 25 and those ВЈ1 weekend bets have gone to £10 bets online and in store. My fiancee is so supportive. Luckily. She was the one telling me I had a problem but like when someone tells you that you have a problem you don't believe them until you sit in a quiet room and think about it. Yes maybe I do have a problem. Do I want to always be like this? No? I used to enjoy having my football bets but now it seems like I have to do it each weekend. Last year I went over 6 months without gambling and set up my own business which went well until I sold it and that's when it started again. I would like advice on how to stop and how others did it before I lose the support network I currently have around me.

Many thanks

J

Hi J and welcome to the forum ! It's good that you realise that you have an issue with your gambling . As compulsive gamblers we cannot win simply because we cannot stop , you said that you felt as though you had to do your footy bets on a weekend and that's really saying to yourself that you can't live without them ! You also said that you'd given up for 6 months before , so you can do it and maybe the distraction of your business was a key point in that ? There's a lot you can do to help you stop , the one we use mainly on here is the Time , money location triangle and if you keep it broken then you can't bet . You can self exclude from bookies it only takes s couple of photos and s few minutes to do , you can also download blocking software to your devices do you can't access gambling sites , there's a free one called k9 but others are available, also limiting your access to cash or cards or even handing control of your finances to your partner would help ! The main one though is about you , how much you want to stop and your willpower? There's tons of advice on here so if you need to know anything just ask us or speak to gamcare who will point you in the right direction ! I wish you well my friend and maybe will speak to you again . Best wishes Alan

Hi Alan.

Thanks for the welcome. I wouldn't say I needed to do them it just felt like a routine if that makes sense. Me and my fiancee have come up with a plan of my wages, she has, and I get like pocket money for the things I need such as petrol, going out and playing football etc. I'm determined to stop. I worked abroad for 4 years so most countries that I lived in had restrictions on gambling websites so I couldn't gamble and when I was home during the seasons I wouldn't really gamble. It's since I have finished working abroad as I feel I have a lot of spare time of that makes sense

Sounds like you have a plan already there my friend , it's great that you have your partners support as it makes it much easier to deal with when its out in the open . Just focus on something else with your life instead and I'm sure you'll be fine! I wish you both well but if you feel that you need to talk with anyone or get advice or even if you just want a good old rant , then this is the place !! Take care buddy !
