i went to a barber shop the other day and it said on the menu "cut throat shave - £11"

I wonder if i would get my money back if they did it without cutting my throat....?

.....

.....False advertising i say :-).......

Bit like a so called bonus.................(30 times wagering limit applies..........i think i will actually take the shave instead.........)

day@atime wrote: Stupid question maybe but what on earth are you doing in a betting shop. Hang about in a barber shop my friend you are eventually going to get a get a haircut.

I was with other people who were playing roulette at dinner time in work. I could of easily not gone in, but it's not a common thing, i'm comfortable going in betting shops anyway, as I said it's quite therapeutic and I look around at the people in there and most of the time no one is happy!

I have (had) savings of around £17,000. I'd say about £1,500 or so of that was profit from bookies/casino. I lost £1,000 on online roulette last weekend and lost £2,000 online today trying to chase that back at odds of 1/2. Down to £14,000 in the bank and I'm terrified, absolutely petrified, that I am going to end up doing what you did and punt it all on a low return bet to get the £3,000 back... That is why I have joined this site, to stop myself from doing it. I know how sick I feel just now, but I know how tempting it can be to try and chase a loss.

Dont chase it pal. 3k is nothing in the long run. Accept it as a lesson learned. yes you could get lucky and win it back but you could easily end up losing it all in the space of an hour. imagine how your'e feeling now, well times that by 1000 is what you will feel like if you blow it all!

my straight up opinion is this; every below scenario ends in a loss except A) which should be your only move

A) don't do it - keep hold of every penny you have.

B) if you did, do it and as sods law works you will be unlucky as when you really need it ,it never ever works - you will have a bigger loss and end up losing everything chasing that loss. to the point you will go into minus (loans-overdrafts-credit cards) to try recover your loss.

C) you place a bet say manchester united to beat queens park rangers for instance and you risk the entire balance and manage to win and you are back to where you were before you started. Apparant Success......yet you did it and it worked so your brain says well if i did it once why not do a similar bet that seems well in your favour like brazil to beat england as then i can get even more easy money and buy a nice sports car or pay for a holiday in amsterdam and bang the bet loses but this time you re-try and that loses too and in the end it gets every penny off you.

I know this as once you have a win it never seems to repeat on the next gamble, always seems to like know and you lose.

Would you really stop if you won it all back? or would you think wow this is fairly easy and try again?

even a week or month later.........it finally gets you

usually sooner rather than later-------------it's in the nature of how the odds are set

Do you ever get over the loss though? I don't think it will ever leave my mind.. God d**n the psychology behind it is what gets me..

i just think of the kids in africa living in mud huts and feel rich again and put the loss out of my mind....

i truly have let it go..........but i do think if i came into money ever and it was around the figure i spent on gambling i would still think to myself ...."well that has covered what i've lost".................thoughts like that you can't help........however i no longer want to actively chase what i've lost as i would never catch up........it would not work.......i gone far too far to ever recover such a loss

so i had to let it go.............

and it is liberating.........

the debt is depressing though but i treat it as a challenge and like a game of real life Monopoly.......that i cannot lose....

Hi people, its been nearly a year since that stupid mistake of chasing losses and I havn't bet once since, not even entertained it!

The gutting feeling of it has got better and better as the months have gone on and I have only just realised that when I think about it now the gutting feeling is'nt there no more. I think I am completely over it. It was a very tough couple of months at first but time is definitely a healer and I'm back saving money again. Its been a tough lesson learned.

Just thought i'd pop back on here as people seem to dissapear after a few posts.

cheers

Well done it is nice to see stories where the op comes back with good news on their progress.

All I'd say is if you have savings again how about putting them in a must give notice to withdraw account just as an extra safeguard.

As others say the demons can strike at any time and this way you simply won't be able to do anything similar again.

All the best and I hope to see a post next year that your still on the straight and narrow.

Day 1 for me... Great to hear how well you have done mate. Great idea from Steve70 to lodge your savings in a notice account to save any urges lurking up on you...!

hi steven

Mate take into consideration your age like me your young ive lost approx 20/25k, i know this sounds a bit daft but look on the bright side that it was money that you had saved and not borrowing. Money comes and goes im just learning that fact and ive realised that im happier without money for the time being while im getting over realising what ive done to myself. Take each day at a time
