Hello there. Trying to get advice on how people have recovered from devastating losses and begun to feel hope and positivity for the future. I lost both my parents and sank in to a gambling addiction to cope with bereavement. Lost inheritance money and the chance to have the future I wanted. I often struggle to see how life can have meaning or hope after this. I feel like I was a vulnerable cog in the gambling industry wheel. A friend told me to make a list of things to be grateful for . A good job, a roof etc . Is this the way forward ? Any advice gratefully received .

Hi, it can be very very traumatic to go over your losses.  I know from personal experience.

Someone wrote a good point on this forum...  They said a mountain climber spends 90% of time looking ahead, if they spent all of their time looking behind them they simply would never move forwards.

It is easy to become bitter about past losses, but the truth is its gone.  Best to draw a line under the losses and keep looking forwards.

Money will come and go.  But the enjoyment of being gambling free and being able to live without the losses and anxiety is priceless.

I try and focus on the right now and the future.  It will get easier as time progresses.  Making a list of things to be greatful for is a good idea to focus on somthing more positive.

All the best and keep us posted.

@thebean thank you so much. That is really useful advice as I’ve been struggling with these exact thoughts recently, particularly as it’s anniversary of my mother’s death and I feel like I let everyone down. These thoughts just pull you under
