We are sharing the following on behalf of Samaritans. We understand this is a sensitive and difficult topic, so please only engage if you feel comfortable and safe to do so. You can also withdraw your involvement at any stage, and further support can be accessed via both the National Gambling Helpline (0808 80 20 133) and Samaritans (116 123).

Samaritans are exploring what changes are needed to make the gambling industry a safer space. We want to identify how difficult relationships with gambling may impact on a person’s wellbeing and how this might relate to thoughts and feelings around suicide.

Samaritans would like to hear from:

  • family members or partners of an individual who has experience of gambling related harms and suicidal thoughts, feelings or behaviours
  • bereaved families whose loved ones have died by suicide in relation to their gambling
  • people who gamble, or have gambled in the past, in a way that has seriously damaged or disrupted their family, personal and working lives, to the extent they have experienced suicidal thoughts

The research will be carried out as a one-to-one interview over a video call, lasting about an hour with an experienced interviewer, and everything you share will be kept strictly confidential.

Your insights will help Samaritans to develop recommendations for changes in the way the UK gambling industry support individuals experiencing severe distress or suicidal thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
