Hi Jonny.

I signed up to this and on day 11 now. Every day I want to see the days add up.
Start a journey like I have to beat this horrible addiction. Some great stories on here and loads support. I’ve been a problem gambler 20 years and always chasing them big wins which are very rare. I also found the more I won the greed grow. The mental health the anxiety and stress it caused was just too much and I needed to talk and just move on from gambling. Wish you all the best and always popping on forum to chat.

Hi Jonnylaad, welcome to our not so little club. Reaching out is a big step to take and there are many people willing to share their advice on how to beat this.

Personally I would suggest there is only 1 road to take and that is stopping completely because as a compulsive gambler it is impossible to cut down when chasing losses. You have already said you are chasing the big win to put things right, but when you think logically about this you know it is almost impossible that it will happen. Accepting the losses are gone is a big part of moving forward.

You need to put some defences in place to stop you gambling when the urge arises. First I would recommend registering with Gamstop which will block gambling sites. Next put a blocker on your phone or whatever device you use, I have Betblocker installed for the maximum of 5 years. Once installed it can't be removed and you will not get access to gambling sites. Also contact your Bank to ask them to put a block on gambling transactions from your debit card. I have all these in place and it really helps when temptation comes knocking.

I would also recommend contacting a Gamcare advisor, they are brilliant and will help you specifically for your own situation. They arranged some counselling sessions for me which at first were really daunting but to be able to talk things through with someone who won't judge you was very good in helping my recovery.

Read other peoples stories and pick up tips on how to get through each day but remember, no matter how far someone has come we all start at day 1. It is what happens from then on that counts.

hope this has given you some ideas on where to start, stay strong and each morning wake up thankful you didn't gamble yesterday.

All the best

Hello mate,

Well done for reaching out, it's a very tough thing to do. The question is, do you want to stop or just cut down?

For me, the enjoyment came from football accumalators on the weekend, which usually included socialising with my friends. The difference between myself and them was the gambling every single second of each day Monday-Friday. I wanted to cut down but it was unfortunately all or nothing.

Gamstop offers self-exclusion on every betting site, a fantastic tool for anyone wanting to completely stop. If you want to just cut down, perhaps deposit limits? You could always give login details to a friend or relative who could check you aren't changing the limits?

Good luck mate, this forum is full of people who know how you feel.
