Have been a compulsive gambler for 10+ years since I was about 16. Every 3-6 months I would have an episode, spend/borrow a fortune and be paying it off for the next few years. But eventually I stopped for over a year. I recently had trouble in May/June time, and got back into it. £1000+ later and I eventually reached out to GamCare. I was set up with some counselling sessions, and did have been doing this for the last 10-12 weeks. I finished my final session last Thursday, and instantly I gambled on that same Thursday evening. Everything I went through in the sessions, about trigger points and communication with family went straight out of the window, I just made a new account and put the money in, and the snowball effect went on and on again to now.

As I am writing this I am wanting to gamble, the compulsiveness is there I just know it is wrong. I've wasted everyones time by having these sessions when I am not making use of them. I have all the tools there to stop, I know what I need to do but I just cant do it, there is something inside my head telling me I should Gamble. I honestly don't know what I can do. I thought this was it, I was committed to changing for good and now I am back where I started.

Good Evening DanJones18

I am sorry to hear that you have found things difficult following your last session. Can I reassure that you have not wasted anyone's time at all. Relapses can be a part of the recovery journey but it is how you respond to them. You have been able to stop for a year and that is fantastic. Right now you have taken the step to reach out to the forum rather than to gamble and that is encouraging as you are finding different ways to occupy your time. Was there one strategy that you went through in your sessions that you could put into place to help you right now?

Please know that you are not alone and we are here to help and support you. You can reach out to the team that you were having sessions with or you are more than welcome to get in touch with us here at the helpline 24 hours a day on 0808 802 0133 and we can talk through everything a bit more.

Wishing you all the best,

Ricki,

The ONLY change I have made. Blocked my bank account being able to make betting deposits. It’s changed the game for me. 46 days, no bet or deposit, having gambled daily for 3 years and compulsive since 1998. All down to simple block. I didn’t even know I could…

good luck.
