Can't seem to find the post I was reading about blocking bank cards for online use. Can anyone give me some info on this? How did you go about it? Did you have success staying away from online casinos? Basically ive given up my bank card but I need to do more so the temptation isn't there when I get the urge.

Dean0 has a thread on a basic Barclays account which is ideal but anywhere else, you'll need to order a new card & scratch off the CVV number. Soz can't say hello properly but hope this helps?

I read a post where someone said they draw the cash out and keep it at home. I'm seriously considering this.

I actually found my little way of getting through the month. After I'd paid off credit card, loan payments and usually lost a bit gambling, I then take out whatever's left - eg, £500 in cash to last through the month. I've never had a problem with offline bookmakers, and there isn't a casino where I live. So it actually felt like a relief once I had the cash in my drawer at home and I knew it was safe.......not sure about if I can find someone to look after my credit card at the moment so I'll probably keep doing the above for a while.

Oddly, I've done the opposite. As my addiction was primarily offline slot machines (pubs), I would goto the pub with just my card (they didn't do cashback and it's a walk to the nearest cash point). I guess it's easy enough to get around (walk to a cashpoint) but it provides the thinking space to take a reality check.

You can get a card which has to be loaded before you can spend. It's the same as a normal bank card except it doesn't have your balance available unless you load it to the card. So if you're looking at giving someone financial control a card like this would be good. Because they control the amount available to you.
There's also cash only bank cards available. They are the same as any other bank card with direct debit etc. But there's no online facility attached
Meaning you can't use them to pay anything online

I agree with pre-paid cards.

I've chopped up my debit cards for the time being, I then went on my bank and made sure all my direct debits are in place and then set up a standing order for £70 per week to my pre-paid card.

This is enough for me for food and essentials but it's not enough that I'd even be tempted to spend on gambling because I know after £70 I have no way of getting anymore cash - even if you do a bank transfer it can take around 8 hours to complete and chances are you aren't gonna be sat around for 8 hours waiting to deposit.

I'm liking the idea of the pre paid card with the standing order.
One thing I'm worried about is using online banking to transfer more to it, (although I did mainly gamble online and can't use the pre paid card there)
How do folk get round that?
Just get rid of the online banking?

Hi Killieboy

We've moved your thread to overcoming problem gambling as this is where strategies around bank cards etc. are often discussed.

Thanks

Rebecca

My pre-paid card isn't instant. So it takes about 8 hours for funds to transfer from online banking to the card. So it's likely that after that amount of time, your urge will have passed and you will be thinking more logically.

Hope this helps
