Hi Guys,

Still new on here and I've not read every post yet, but I was wondering are there any success stories out there where people have managed to kick their addiction 1st time?

I've read a lot of posts about people relapsing. This is the 1st time I've really confronted the fact that I have an addiction and my wife has made the very valid point that if she forgives me now, whats to say that I wont relapse and slip into this again in the future? I honestly dont know how to answer, I'm on day 3 with no gambling and right now, I can't imagine a worse activity to take part in, but what about the future?

Hi Hayward,

I’m relatively new here but I’m really close to 50 days GF, something that I’d never would have thought 49 days ago. I came here after my partner caught me, I kinda stumbled on it, I’m hooked now. There’s so much to read on here and I’m sure it’s early doors but you’ve probably found something that relates to your situation. Relapse for me is not an option, I’m kind of a seasoned member of giving up stuff now and through programs/groups I’ve given up drugs and cigarettes, gambling is as much as an addiction as both of them, to abstain must 100 percent mean never to do it again. As harsh as it sounds, it’s like giving an alcoholic a drink or a smoker a cigarette, you can never have one. Hopefully I’ve made a bit of sense and I wish you all the best on your road to recovery !

Much love, Daniel

Thanks for your comments Daniel.

You're right, there is a lot here I can relate to, some of the stories I've read on here could have been written by me they are so similar.

I'm kinda the same as you, when I set my mind to something, I tend to do it.

Well done on 50 days! I look forward to saying the same.

I just gave my other half control of all the finances, internet banking etc. We now do all food shopping together and fill up my car on the way back. Maybe actions speak louder than words, yes I’ve promised to quit gambling before but I be never got the help I so badly needed but told myself I didn’t. A big win would be like a loss for me now as my family and friends would be so disappointed in me so that’s what’s keeping me away from it.

Really glad your family have been so supportive, I think once you’ve admitted it to yourself and then most people will be sympathetic and understanding.

Good luck, hope you manage to sort things out.

Btw a meeting may help you too, in mine there were many, many success stories, one guy who hadn’t gambled in 30 years. Lots of long term non gamblers, bear in mind many people who post on here whoeve had a relapse need that support so just because you might not hear about the success stories as much, doesn’t mean they don’t happen 🙂
