Hi

I don’t really know what I’m hoping to gain from posting here, but I’ve pretty much exhausted every avenue trying to stop.

I’m a lying, cheating so and so (not just when it comes to gambling unfortunately). I’ve also got no self control (again not just around gambling). I’m miserable, constantly thinking about money and how to clear my debt. I haven’t been able to stop gambling, no matter how many times I’ve cheated my way out of a hole. I don’t see myself ever beating this, no matter how much I lose or how bad I feel, I’ll be trying to gamble again ASAP. I just don’t see a way out and I don’t want to live my life being an addict.

I don’t even want advice as I’ve tried it all to stop. I’ve accumulated two years worth of debt since a binge over the weekend. I just needed to admit it someone as I’m in a web of lies and second chances with everyone else.

Hi ric1,

What have yo tried so far? I can relate to what you are saying, and you CAN stop gambling, you just haven't found what works for you YET. Have you considered, counselling, going to GA, going to rehab?

Putting things into action is what is required to stop, have you self excluded, have you handed over the finances to a loved one?

Hi ric1,

Sorry to hear this.

Firstly you have to realise that anyone, and I mean anyone can stop.

After that you just need the tools and to work at your recovery every day - basically for ever.

Your first stop should be gamblers anonymous meetings. If you have been in the past and failed, then just try again.

The other tools to break the cycle...

Gamstop self exclusion

Multi venue exclusion

Give control of your finances to your partner.

Counselling

By the sounds of it the above 4 plus attending GA meetings sounds like a necessity for you.

Hi

Thanks for replying. To be honest I’ve tried all of the above and I always end up back in the same situation. It’s just so easy to get money from loans, credit cards etc. I’ve been bailed out in the past and I just can’t let my family down again by telling them. I’m only recently married and it would break my wife’s heart if she knew.

It just feels like everyone says the same rubbish about doing these things, but they don’t actually work. I’ve excluded myself from about 30 bookmakers, but I’ve literally spent days in a good few of them and never once been challenged.

I work in support services myself with other addictions. I’ve studied psychology and been a counsellor in the past. I feel like I know enough about psychological treatment to understand that it doesn’t work.

I’ve been gambling for over 20 years and I keep ending up back at it. I even tried calling the Gamcare helpline yesterday when I was struggling, but to be honest it was no help either. I just don’t see anyway out and I do not want to live this life.

I just need some way to clear this debt as I can’t think of anything else at the minute. I literally lost £60 on Thursday and now I owe thousands from trying to chase it.

to be honest a lot of people on here assume that by cutting access to gambling & money then they will automatically be cured

it doesnt really work like that , the generic advice people spurn out about treating a gambling addiction will only work for a very low percentage

you must first identify why it is your gambling in the first place , for most its the idea of the "big win" solving all your problems in one hit ,

only problem is if attaining the "big win" was that simple gambling wouldnt exist and neither would this forum

this is where the "chase" element comes into play " oh no ive just lost a grand trying to win ten .....better try another grand my luck might change "

suddenly your 2K down and start to realise youve blown 2 months salary in the space of an hour

que the "hangover" gambling hangovers are wierd experiences and for most people usually result in more gambling

the process will pretty much keep repeating itself until you and only you have decided you need to change

theres no magic potion , no easy solution and no number of days you can count too

you have to deicde you want to repair yourself
