Who else kept spreadsheets of their gambling a s way of convincing themselves they were in control? Dutifully putting in all the deposits and withdrawals, everything pending, what your bank account said...

...and somehow managing to completely overlook the fact that you were still losing all along! For me it was false security. Well I had made it back up before, why won't I this time? Just deleted my gambling spreadsheets and feel happier for it.

I did used to do that, although must be 5 years or so since I abandoned them - I didn't want to see my losses quantified anymore as it made me feel even worse (it didn't make me stop though, such is the flawed logic of a gambler)
