Just returned home having attended a Twenty20 cricket match with my father, which was good fun. On another note, I successfully applied for a Post Office Platinum Credit Card last week and I now have the card and PIN code. I have a credit limit of £6,400 and I am going to use it wisely. This time last year I blew £6,000 on an afternoon's horse racing via my credit card, but this year I am going to use the credit to pay off my NatWest personal loan via a money transfer thus shifting the debt onto an interest-free credit card. I am keen to reduce my interest payments and this will certainly help. I need to call the Post Office tomorrow to make the necessary arrangements. I am very keen to off-load my personal loan at the start of July. A few hefty bills have come my way in the past week, but I am hoping to stay on course for being debt-free by Christmas Day of this year. Fingers crossed!

Loving those days of gamble free mounting up!

With regards to the credit card, it might be worth considering passing it on to someone else just to get that extra block in.

You really do not want to go from having this great interest-free loan to one that charges huge interest and charges for withdrawing cash, do you?

I know as I have made similar mistakes in the past. I really don't want you to have to make the same mistake again.

Just my thoughts for you today, mate.

It is 6 months until Christmas and my current Experian Credit Score is 923 (Good). It has gone up by 16 points since last month. The amount of outstanding debt is £7,305 (down from last month's figure of £7,894). I am getting there little-by-little. Once I have stoozed my NatWest Personal Loan onto my new Post Office Platinum Credit Card, I will at least get some respite from my current monthly interest payments.

Your debt really is tumbling down now. It must be gratifying to see that light at the end of the tunnel. How were we so foolish as to allow ourselves to get into this situation in the first place?

I was a total fool to have got myself into such a financial mess last year. Last summer's betting resulted in a financial meltdown and my binge-betting in the autumn only made things worse. By November, I was around £14k in debt and had probably lost £20k during the course of the year. Still, I stopped and now have 236 gamble-free days under my belt. My debt is half what is was last November and my credit rating has been significantly repaired. I am going abroad at the end of next week and will be away for over two weeks with no option of gambling so I shall cruise through the 250-day barrier without a care in the world. My next task is getting my debts down below the £5k mark as they will feel a lot more manageable then. I am still hoping to be debt free on Christmas Day, but it is going to be a hard slog and I shall need some luck along the way. I am planning to sell off another chunk of my CD collections as well as various old books and computer software that I no longer need. I may also start entering competitions and then flogging any prizes online - it is worth a try. On another note, I arranged for a £5k money transfer today from my credit card to my current account. As soon as it goes through, I shall pay off my personal loan and say goodbye to the interest I am forking out month-after-month.

What a great post. It just shows that the dept does come down if you keep working at it.

Hope you enjoy your time away
