we have recently found out a family member has a gambling problem he has been encorage to seek help and advice from family members but just not taking that next step and getting help- how can we get him help if he won't call up to get help??? He has agrees for us to look after and manage his money so hoping that will help stop the gambling but I don't think that solve the problem? I feel he needs to speak to someone as he is depressed aswell. His parents have giving up on him as just had enough as he has been an issue for years for various reasons. he needs help but has to take the next step- how can we help him do that??

Sorry Va but you can't. The best shot you have is for everybody to make their boundaries both emotionally and financially so nobody is enabling his addiction. The hope would be that eventually he will hurt enough and become tired enough of his life that he will seek change. Then and only then will there ever be positive change.

Even though he has agreed to let you manage money don't think that is the end of the gambling. Once he becomes desperate enough he will find a way to get funds. You will most likely end up being very bitter and resentful.

This is not meant to sound harsh but if he is not looking for real help then there really isn't much you can do:( It is sad and frustrating as h**l to watch a loved one destroy their life but nothing we do has any lasting effect.

Hi Va

Echo Cathy.

The desire for change has to come from him. Until that happens all you can do is protect yourselves emotionally and financially and wait.
