Hi,
This is my story. I have been gambling now for around 10 years, 6 of those out of control, I have had longs and credit cards to fund my habit, having big wins with the inevitably huge losses. I told my parents around 3 years ago, cried with them, they helped me out paying off some debts (around £4k at that time).
Seeing the look on my mums face when I told her, instantly sobers a man up, the look of disappointment.
Over the last 3 years I have managed to do it again, blowing and owing around £7k. My earnings have doubled in that time and I now earn £75k a year, which is an amazing amount, however I’m still skint every month, my Gf has no idea and it would truely hurt her.
I have called up all the betting companies (all sports betting sites) and self banned myself this morning, the first step I hope in a road to survival. I have also contacted all my loan companies to advise on payment plans to pay them off over the next 6 months (I realise I’m lucky due to my salary I can pay them off so quickly).
My biggest challenge is to avoid gambling in the future, I love football and the enjoyment has gone out of it for the last 6 years due to heavy betting, I want my life back.
Just looking for a bit of support as I can’t face people knowing what I’ve done. What are people’s best tips when they feel like gambling again?
Hi honesty is the best advice. Make sure you pay your parents back. Go to G A. You should allow your gf the choice to make her own decisions. You are losing a lot of money and she must notice. Hiding and lying make it easier to continue. She might help you control your money. This is a life long addiction, it doesn't get better. You can't live a lie. My husband had a great job that funded his gambling for 20years, But he handed over finances so all bills and mortgage were paid. You need to find a new mindset and something else to do instead of gambling. Make sure you enjoy the vast sums of money you earn and stop throwing it away.
