I am a university student, in their second year who has wasted a lot of their student loan gambling. I have usually been able to get by spending less until my next loan, but I am now in my overdraft with payments piling up. Ive tried to quit several times and each time I just gamble again losing more each time. I have signed up to gamstop but twice have just found sites not affiliated with gamstop and lost £xxxx through them, I am scared this will happen again in the future. Willpower alone will not get me through this I know that and need to find a way to stop for ever, before I damage my relationships with family and friends anymore. Feel as though I'm helpless and this will be my life. Thanks for reading and sorry if this just sounds like a lot of jumbled sentences together

Hello rsu6

Thanks for sharing this.

I can hear how much stress your financial situation is putting you under and your worries for the future. It sounds really difficult feeling helpless and scared of the possible future impacts of your gambling. Not feeling in control can be very anxiety-provoking but you’re not on your own.

We offer a range of support services and you can find out more about these here. If you haven’t done so already, we would really encourage you to get in touch with our Helpline on 0808 8020 133 and/or our 1:1 Livechat (which are both open 24 hours every day) to have a chat about everything and to discuss what support is available to you.

Well done for signing up to GamStop – putting restrictions in place can be helpful and you might find our factsheet on other methods of taking control of your gambling spending useful. If you would like some guidance around finances and managing your money, we run a Money Guidance Service – you can phone our Helpline number and they can refer you to the service.

Well done for reaching out.

Wishing you all the best,

Ellen
