Posted by Megadowntroden (Moved from overcoming problem gambling).

Im 27 at one point i didnt even know these machines excisted. I was introduced by a work collegue and i was instantly hooked. Fast forward 3 years and ive lost far too much money. Yesterday i had a day off i thought i just spend £20 and limit myself to it. I took £550 in walked out with nothing. Theses machines have ruined my life.

My mum said if i gambled again shed throw me out so i spent hours walking around the local town trying to find somewere to go if your homeless. The council wouldnt help me as im not in priority need. My mums been good to me and i cant keep doing this too her.

Fast forward to today ive been to the doctors and hes referred me for counciling and given me some tablets 🙂

I attempted to take my own life im not proud of it but its something that happened. My mum has taken me back for now on the condition that my rent is £500 a month and i sent up a direct debit so it goes straight into her account.

Hi Megadowntroden

Welcome to the forum, and I'm very sorry that we haven't responded to you before now. You'll see that your original post has received a few replies. Sometimes when a post is moved by a moderator it can appear as a moderator's post (rather than a forum user's post), which may explain why you have not yet had a reply here yet. I'm sure you'll see that the forum is a very supportive and safe place for you, and there's usually a great deal of support and advice offered by other forum users.

I'm very sorry to hear about the impact gambling has had on your life, and that you felt things were so bad that you tried to end your life. How do you feel now that you have been to the doctors and have started your medication? It's great that you have accessed that support, and that you have some counselling lined up. Well done for taking the step to get some help here too. Things can get better for you, and we are all here to help you.

I can see that you feel sorry about how this has affected your relationship with your mother, a relationship which clearly holds great importance to you. It sounds like she is standing by you, and hopefully the new financial arrangement you have set up will be in everyone's best interests, as it may also mean you have less access to money with which to gamble. There are other blocks you can put in place such as self-exclusion - a way of barring yourself from the betting shops. Perhaps you would like to call the freephone helpline: 0808 8020 133 or netline: https://icontact.mplaurora.net/ChatApp/JoinChat.aspx to speak about this in more detail, as well as to find out about face-to-face support that's available in your area.

Do let us know how you're getting on.

I wish you all the best.

Laura
