Hi All,
My name is Paul, i am 25 and have had a gambling problem for around 5 years.
I tried to stop gambling last year and got help from family members who took out a loan for me to pay them back for. I owe them £20k but now got in trouble again earlier this year. I started again earlier this year, and have since racked up a further £10k. Should i go down the DMP route?
I actually hate gambling now. I only did it to try and win back some money and now i am in even more trouble.
Any help and how to get over this would be appreciated?
Also, how can i join the GamCare online chats as it would not let me connect to the one that is running now?
Thanks,
Hi Paul
Welcome and well done on admitting you are powerless over gambling like the rest of us. I would say you have done one of the hardest steps in admitting and posting on here how you feel over gambling, it's an horrible addiction/illness. You have to WANT to stop gambling for things to work and I won't kid you it's very hard in the early days but by being on this site and reading other people's story's I found this has helped me in my recovery. I can't comment on what route for you to go down with your debt but I know from reading other people's stories there has being a few used stepchange. I would also try and tell maybe your parents about your situation and maybe they can help you beat this addiction for once and for all even though you are probably very embarrassed and ashamed to talk to anyone about it ! You have to register separately to go into the chat forums I think ? Hope you get sorted mate and I will look out for future updates.

Hi Paul,
Money side of things I'd reccomend getting some sort of plan in place whether that be a DMP etc, and draw up a budget for the next few months.
However it's really risky to concentrate on just the financial side of things are the ultimate issue here is the gambling so what I did was sort out my finances (I got on payment plans, and drew up an 18 month budget) and then forgot about it. Pushed it to the back of my head. Because then you can focus on quitting gambling for good.
Try practical blocks such as self exclusion, blocking software and financial restrictions. Then use this forum to get tips, vent your feelings, and join the chats. And slowly you can start to see a life without gambling.
Good luck
