Just stop betting - if it was just that easy.
I bet big on football matches. Usually on the number of goals in the games.
I started off with a nice profit of over £XX and i have lost it all on gambling huge stakes ranging from £X to £XX.Â
I tell myself i won't place another bet but the next day i will be putting another one on whilst being all tense throughout the match until it wins or if i lose the feeling of hurt an anger. Yet i don't learn and stop.
I have a second child on the way and the plan is to move into a new house with my partner and kids in 4 years. But i am throwing the chance of this by wasting money we could use to save as a deposit for a house.
I have signed up so i cant bet online for 5 years but i can easily go in the bookies and bet or even get my brother to bet for me.Â
I am struggling to find a way of getting this to stop as i am constantly saying "no more" but just never happens.
Has anyone got any advice that has been in my situation?
Thanks
J
You have to put an end to it all, because you are a compulsive person and its dangerous for your mental health and future. The conscious consequences go out the window and we spend every penny and future money to the gutter. It will deceive your own thoughts to justify engaging. You need to completely get away from placing bets for your own health and familys future. It releases chemicals in the brain, so that when you are not playing , the depression it induces to pull us back, is unbeatable at times. With time and recovery you will beat this addiction.
After years of being on this site and failing ive realised the only way to succeed is to not have money. I transfer my money each month after bills and mortgage etc to a loved one then get cash off them when I need it. In 2016 I spent 8000 on all my socialising and holidays after bills, in 2017 5600, in 2018 1400 on everything. My money is now saved and used to pay off my mortgage each year. With this in mind I am able to look forward to a retirement and to not stress myself out for the sake of my meantal health. Tell youre brother you have a problem and he wont place that bet. Self exclude from online (gamstop), cansinos (sense scheme) and all local bookies (search online for telephone number and post ur photo to them!!!!!) U have a partner to take control of the money so that will really help. Some even take cash and give receipts to justify spending. But carry no cards as you can just take cash out and go in bookies. Hope this helps mate.Â
I agree.. the best way is to find someone you trust to look after your money. I don't even have a bank account lol. It means i can't gamble online and i can't be bothered to go the betting shop. I've not gambled since April. It's not worth it in the end and your better off focusing your mind on something else. I bought a cheap 3d printer and was playing with that for a month. Better than P*****g it away in the bookies. Goodluck

Hi Jimmy, you should be proud of yourself. The hardest part is not placing the bet. Keep it up!

Just remember the past is the past and we all make mistakes. Just learn from it.
Hi Jimmy. I too used to bet on thr goal market. Until I lost everything I had. Just like you I would feel tense while the bet was running if thr bet come in the joy would last for about 5 mins and then I’m thinking what next to bet on. Unfortunately when thr bet lost that feeling would stay with me for hours/days sometimes I couldn’t even sleep.  When your first trying to stop I wouldn’t even watch football or look at the scores or listen to talk sport I had to stay away from it all.  I’m finding it hard everyday but 14 days GF. I would say get your money out of your account as you can always find a way to bet online. Sports betting online is what worried me.Â
SM8 - what you just described is exactly how i have been.
I have decided to transfer the difference between my income and out goings to a Premium Bonds account. That way i know i can't take out money from my bank account as it is for bills only and with having a premium bonds account is takes a few days to have the funds in my account so if i get the urge to bet, i can't. Plus i can then save - well that's the plan.
That’s great jimmy. I have to move all my money out of my account into a savings account which you can only withdraw from by machine. I jumped on the bonds last year then took the money out of there and lost it all. Bonds is a great idea and I’m gonna but money back in there once I’m back on my feet. I always look at the results and either think I would of won money on that. Or see a result and think thank god ive gave up as I would of lost big on that. Ie PSG last week along with Real would of easily lost a few months wages on that.Â
For me the temptation will always be there I just have to keep fighting away from it. It’s a tug and war between myself the online betting is what I have no self control over. The betting shop and the casino I can handle. Keep going mate. If you ever need to chat you know where I am.Â
I also found that having no money is helpful when trying not to gamble....
But nothing much else! (might work for drug and alcohol addictions too?)
However, I do NOT want to live the rest of my life with no money just so I can't gamble!!Â
For me, I want/need to learn to live with money again, and not gamble. That would be much better...

Once again, your describing by situation! Checking the results and telling myself I would have won etc.
Don’t mention PSG - I had above 1.5 goals in the game they played in the champions league but it only had 1 goal in the game. The other team missed a pen. This was only betting because I lost the night before in Liverpool’s game. I won when there was 2.5 goals in their game and I then put £500 on above 3.5 goals when there wasn’t - I got greedy and lost.
I usually put a couple of quid on both teams to score and above 2.5 goals on accumulators on Saturday games but I am just sick of the gambling that I can’t be bothered- I’ve been doing it since I was a teen and I’m now 35. I also usually watch 5/6 games a weekend but I’m going to watch the 2 main games instead. It’s shows that the gambling is even effecting the sport I love.
I know how you feel mate. I used to watch all sport any sport. Sometimes I would watch games from Sunday to Sunday. Would love watching football but then once I would lose money on it I would hate the game. Hate the players even the refs if they blew the bet for me.Â

Doesnt help that there is a betting advert every 30 seconds. I’ll be honest I’ve really struggled todsy. Two weeks ago today is when I lost half of my savings account the whole next week I felt awful couldn’t sleep was depressed didn’t want to go to work as I thought what’s the point in it all. In the end the book maker has closed my account. And I’ve felt fine all last week but today I’ve struggled and thought about placing a bet all day. I’ve been looking at betting apps I can download and been looking at the market. I come very close to betting on the arsenal game tonight. And that feeling set in when I would of won money. I haven’t placed a bet but I can feel it’s eating away at me tonight Â

Hi SM8

Well done for not placing a bet on the Arsenal game, you might not know it but tonight you're a winner.
