Hi. I'm new to this forum. I've been with my partner 5 years, due to get married in July. I knew nothing of his gambling problem until we moved in together and he told me he had gambled away all the money we were saving for our wedding, about £1000. I took away access to the joint account and put blocking software on his phone and naively thought he would be able to kick it himself - he insisted he didn't need help. Now, I wish I had done something. We are now nearly £20,000 in debt. He told me he'd lost £300 yesterday, then when I insisted on accessing his bank, said it was £3000. When I asked what a payment was, he broke down and said he has two loans out totalling £15000. He's also into his whole overdraft of £3000. I don't know how to cope with all the information, and support him at the same time. He's talking to someone on the web chat right now so the first step has been taken, at least. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Hello Pixie.
I know it's of no consolation but your not alone. I'm a compulsive gambler in recovery and it is possible. On the Family and friends thread you'll find a fantastic group of supportive people who have worn your shoes. Maybe it would be good for you to also post there.
It really is heart breaking what this addiction does to the innocent parties like your self and understanding this very powerful sly addiction. Put your self first
I really wish you well and look after you..
Ouch, that's a hard one... This really is an evil addiction - I was gambling in secret, steadily in control until blowing £4,000 in litterally 24hrs! I know now it's time to stop before I lose even more... All I would say is be there for your partner the best way you can, even though you probably find resentment against him. Never in a million years did I think I'd ever lose money like I have done, it's an awful spiderweb you get tangled up in!
Good luck to you both, NM
