Hi

I have developed a gambling problem over the last 14 months.

Prior to 14 months ago I never really gambled and was very sensible with money. It started after my relationship ended, going into a local slots/gaming venue and spending small amounts on digital roulette games.

Its now snowballed into playing these games whenever I see these machines and I work on the road so see them at most service stations. Sounds silly, doesn't it? Just don't play them - but i have a real issue with impulsively and there have been times I've walked away.  I enjoy having the hard cash paid out there and then, maybe why I've thankfully online gambling hasn't appealed to me.

I said to myself at Christmas I wouldn't play these things again. All my debit and credit cards were cut up to stop cash withdrawals so that helped but some of the machines allow you to buy a ticket on card so today that's what I did using Google pay and relapsed hard loosing £520. Feel so pssed off, wasting good money and money I can't afford to loose.

However following this I've put a gambling block on the card with my bank. It doesn't say if these machines will be recognised by the block but hopefully it will be a deterant to not use again.  Also will check this thread and post updates to stay on the right track. Please if any one has found themselves in a similar situation share your story and any advice or things you found helpful I would like to hear.

The forum is littered with stories much like yours

The machines in the service stations are intentionally there for addicts who are on the Road a lot , its very very rare anyone else will bother playing them , if you look around next time your there you will notice its always the same types on them

Usually middle age blokes who are sales reps / freight carriers / tradesmen

Thing is the wins on these machines are small Never more than £500 absolutle max yet you can easily lose 2-300 in the space of 30 mins - hour

Well the machine will only pay the 500 jackpot out once in a blue moon so you are almost immediately on the backfoot scrambling trying to cobble together small wins to get back even

This is the trap designed to suck you in before you know it you'll be 500 under 3 hours down with no hope left

its not much of a life is it , pumping coins into a machine in a motorway services there are better things to be doing with your life I encourage you too think about this

Hi Tom,

I wonder how you might feel about an approach used by some of our forum members, where they have an arrangement with a family member, that once a week they sit down together and look at the banking transactions for the week gone by, the purpose would be to create more transparency and accountability, to inhibit spending on gambling, as well as prompt attention and exploration of any slip ups that occur. This way you are not alone with the challenge, you are allowing someone else to be on the same page as you, and you are allowing them to support your progress.

If this idea doesn't appeal to you, I wonder how you might feel about having some free and confidential appointments with a practitioner? Many people find that having a regular appointment for a few weeks can provide support for their motivation and focus, and firm up their recovery plans. If you would like to talk, please call us on freephone 0808 8020 133 so we can look at these or other options.

Take care,

Adam.

@forum-admin thanks Adam

I'll look into calling gamcare when need support next time.

Currently been on the sense program 6 months and mistakenly thought it had come to an end so last night tried my luck at a casino. Of course lost money, they twigged I wasn't meant to be in there and got escorted out.
