Hi All,

I have been reading this forum for over a month now and have finally decided to sign up.

I am a 36 male and since June 2016 i have lost 10K on silly, stupid, football bets. It all started following these £25-1K "tipsters" who promised profit. This turned me from an amatuer weekend gambler who would be upset at losing £5 to one who got over confident chucking £500 on some random Norway game.

I have had to learn the hard way of losing money by chasing the losses. The final straw came on Sunday wasting 1K on the football. I promised myself this would be the last throw of the dice, it lost. I have felt all emotions possible from upset to anger to self pity.

Two days ago i quit. Self excluded from all betting accounts and made a promise to myself that it's over for my gambling ways.

I have a partner who knows nothing about this and a son who i worship (who has never gone without). This is what makes me strong to overcome this "illness".

I admire people on this site, the ones who openly discuss the past and future. We can fight this together.

(Two days clean)

Regards

Nebbo

I know exactly how you feel I've tossed stupid amounts away chasing losses I'm only at day 19 but I never want to place another bet again, I realise how daft I have been but when it gets a grip of you reality goes out of the window

like you my gambling has been secret too, by posting & reading on here I feel more positive about things now & am determined to stop, so much better things to spend our money on & none of the stress & anxiety that goes with it, you sound positive about it we have to forget the money we have lost & move on to a better way of life without gambling

Good luck

Hi - Nebbo - parent of a young person in your position. I am glad you have come on here and highlighted the problem with football bets being so attractive. I think people think it is ok with football because you have to think about the skills of the teams beforehand etc and you feel like more of a sportsman than a gambler, more innocent than casinos, online games, bingo. But it is not more innocent because if you read posts on here football bets have created a host of addicted gamblers who have lost thousands like you and ruined whole families and I feel sorry for all you young people who end up suffering because of it. I know first hand that it can start off with the football bets and then you slowly creep on to other gambling sites and then all hell lets loose when it gets out of hand. I hope you still have your head above water and are debt free and are in a good financial position at the moment. I can tell you if you carry on losing huge amounts now 2,5 or 10 years down the line you are risking losing everything including your lovely little family, sorry to sound hard but that is a real possibility. Luckily I can see you have bravely admitted the problem and you want to do something about it. So make today Day 1 of not gambling, don't dwell on the past and the losses and make a plan for the future and save up the amount you would have thrown away and put it towards something special for your partner and little boy. The "secret" thing is a difficult one - if you think you can nip this in the bud now all well and good - if not perhaps a good idea to confide in someone close. It is a real deterrent if someone else knows and also they could possibly moniter your spending as well - but let's hope it doesn't come to that. You have a positive vibe so good luck to you and your family.

Hi Nebbo,

Your life sounds like an exact mirror image of mine...I am 36 years old, I have a 3 year old who is my world and I have wasted the best part of 20 years of my life by throwing money away gambling. I am now nearly 240 days gamble free so believe me if I can do it anyone can.
You will get loads of great advice on here....some you will like and some you wont....but it will all be given with the view to helping you to stop gambling.
As mentioned above confiding in someone is also a big step towards helping you to stop....doesn't have to be your partner right away but believe me it will feel like a massive weight lifted from your shoulders.
Anyway just wanted to wish you well.

Damo

Totally understand your habits. Sports (football &a tennis) is my weak point too. Mainly inplay, and bets that can give you a quick result.

Day 1 for me today. Tried multiple times to give up as my previous posts will show, but after a bad summer I'm ready to kick this once and for all.

All the best in your journey mate.

Thank you for all the positive replies and encouragement, it's much appreciated.

I am now on day 3 and feel better for it. Was thinking about bets today but the dark feeling of losing quickly eradicated all thoughts. I think this self infliction feeling with discourage me in the future. It's going to be a long journey but knowing how supportive this site is makes it all the better. Best wishes to you all. Nebbo
