I’ve been struggling with gambling for about two years now. What started as a bit of fun with friends during lockdown has become an everyday battle for me.
As a student supporting myself, when I spend my pay check the first night, I find myself wondering how I will eat for the rest of the month. I have no one to talk to about it and no where to get help. I’ve done it again today, £600 gone. I’m left with £75 of my overdraft left for the next four weeks. I need a way out.

Its tough when you burn through all your cash, and not for the first time either. Been there many more times than I care to remember. My advice would be to find your local foodbank or perhaps contact your local church. Stay strong fight the urges

I can never quite wrap my head around how people with such little wealth are capable of gambling large amounts of money away

If i lose between 1 and 200 quid i am usually in a foul mood but would rather chop my hands off than play anymore because it gets to the stage where losing becomes so boring and i know its a complete waste of time and money

I mean blowing 600 quid in a session would either mean stupidly high stakes or a very very long session

Only you know the answer but either way theres definitely a lesson to be learnt

Surely you must have become a little fed up during the session and thought " maybe its time to call it a day"

@adam123 You don’t know how much your support somehow relieves me. To know that you got through it and are trying to help me, as well as others. You are a blessing. I am taking notes, I know I can do this! Thank you so much.

@scar Hi there, fortunately, I had time to read your previous reply before you delete it (or the moderators got to it). As much as I appreciate the offer and feel so incredibly lucky to have found some support, I think I need to get through this month with what I have. Perhaps the struggle will further my desire to stop and get through. May this be my last month like this! Thank you so much for you kindness. We need more people like you in this world.

@suckedin Addiction doesn’t know when it’s time to stop or you can’t afford it. Compulsive gambling will take everything if left unchecked. If you are able to use your losses as a way of stopping then great, but in reality most of us, when gambling, don’t operate on a rational level. We try to win back losses even though we really know there’s not much chance of doing so.

@bellashelp Wherever you are, there are counsellors on campus who can help and advise you. There will be a gambler’s anonymous meeting nearby. Don’t count on hope that your previous experience will help you to not do it again, but take firm steps to help yourself. Get support either from your local doctor or GA or call gamcare and get some treatment.

Chris.
