I've suggested this to a few members now who are having a hard time filling the void left by gambling.

I write reviews for a site called Ciao (I am kojak123 on there, have a nosey) which takes loads of my spare time, pays a few quid and is, for me, a very rewarding experience.
The site is one of the tributaries to Amazon reviews, and they don't pay too badly. The way it works is you write a review (on your new car, new TV, make-up, a film you've watched...whatever) and get paid every time it is read/rated by someone. Members read each others work and rate it from "Poor" to "Exceptional", and in turn you read theirs and decide how helpful theirs is.

For the decent writers (and there are some very intelligent people on here, odd how a lot of gamblers are extremely bright) it can pay quite well. It's 1p/2p per rating really, but there is a £1000 pool set aside every month (the premium fund) where exceptional rated reviews get a little extra. The ten best reviews (rather, the top review in ten different categories) is awarded a 'Diamond' and £15, 20 x £10, 50 x £5 and 200 x £2 if memory serves. Basically, any review with a couple of 'exceptional' rates is usually eligible for a few extra quid, and if you can write a really strong detailed review you might have a shot at a diamond.

I write a couple of reviews a month and spend the rest of my time reading and rating other peoples. The more you read and rate, the more people tend to 'return the favour' and rate yours - so really the fewer reviews you write more hits they should each have for reads and rates.

I am not a great writer but I enjoy it, and I made maybe £200 spending money last year from it. A good review might take me 4 hours or so to put together (I do very long detailed write ups!) and I spend about an hour a day on there rating, so it really does while away the time nicely.

I would NOT recommend this to anyone who hasn't installed strong blocking software on their computer. I used to get easily distracted and wander off to have a play while spending all that time on the laptop so it's dangerous if you don't have those barriers in place. For anyone with those filters on, maybe worth a look? The pennies soon build up, even if you're only writing short reviews it's easy to make £5-£10 a month while keeping your mind busy.

(for what it's worth I have no affiliation with the site, I'm just a writer on there.)

Nice one Kev... I'll probably look into this. Expect the ratings for kojak123 to go up a notch over next few days... if get some down time to take a look!

A great post Kev because it highlights how any time can be made useful by earning money. I buy and sell a few things I find on a small scale.

Its not all that easy packing things well but it shows that some work is involved. Thats how any profit can flow one way to me because I know what the deal is

It also reinforces the value of money and I get back into a world of reality
