Morning Guys,

Quick one... i find that at work the biggest gambling urges come from when my colleagues mention there 'weekend accas','midweek champions league accas'. It can be really annoying but i also don't want to go telling them i am a problem gambler because my job orientates around trust with other people's money. I just don't think that's the right way to go about it, any suggestions?

Thanks, EJA88

Hi EJA88,

Interesting one this. I used to do an Acca with the guys at work.
When i came clean about my gambling the guys never thought any different regarding it when i spoke to them about it. It did invoke an interesting conversation regarding one of the lads sons and FOBTs and how he is worried about his son getting addicted to them.

I suppose the issue is that everyone gambles and talks about their wins. Do they ever talk about their losses? Probably not. For me i only ever spoke about my wins when i did.

CJ.

Me and and a couple of colleagues did an acca each week. Only a quid between us. But this Saturday I told them that I'd been betting too much recently and that I'm stepping back from gambling.
Still had conversations at work today about how close they came, and the results in general.
It didn't make me think of betting at all.

Hi guys

Seems I’m not by myself then haha. It’s amazing how many people do gamble, as you mentioned CJ nobody mentions losing. Only the winnings. I’ve been gamble free for 6 days now and to be honest I’m getting a proud feeling for doing so. Feel much happier daily now. I believe I can deal with the work acca chatter now I’ve stabilised a bit more.

Take care, EJA

Hi EJA88
We had a discussion again about some people's stories on here today at work. No names mentioned and if i did use them i used my creative brain to make new names like Guiseppe or Vladimir. 🙂
In all seriousness though, I think people need to be made aware of the negative effects on Gambling. Sadly the government isnt doing much to help, probably due to teh back handers it gets from the taxes.
Keep going, youre doing great. 6 days turn into 7, then 14, then 28. 🙂

Day by day we conquer this battle. 🙂

CJ.

It can be difficult EJA because I would not advise anybody to be open about a gambling problem at work.

You will hear gambling talk and active gamblers are notorious for wanting others to hear about it and join in. This is because it fuels their delusion that its all ok. My view is that many gamblers are addicts even though they would not admit its out of control.

In a way its like smokers who dont want to hear any talk of giving up. They will offer you one again and dont like the non smoking angle

I feel what you are aiming for is inner serenity just to let it wash over you..So what if they are doing that....you know what it did to you so play it down by not responding much to it.

It can be difficult because no recovering gambling addict should be around other gamblers. You cant walk away or be totally honest at work because work is a political situation where you are not totally free to express yourself.

The focus is what gambling did to you...Its not for you and you dont need it in your life

Best wishes from everyone on the forum

Good afternoon Joydivider and CJ, my apologies about the slow replies been busy working and only come on here every couple of days to relighted my mind to the reality of gambling. Top advice JD, I agree 100%. It’s worrying as I believe I have a few mates and work colleagues who get sucked in to gambling. They probably don’t realise it is a problem to them but what I’ve seemed to notice over the last 9 days is not only the amount of money that can be lost to gambling, but the time lost is substantial and can’t be recovered. This is where I agree you CJ. Us as a country/planet are not doing enough to stop gambling. As you say backhanders etc. Making that impossible near enough. We’ve got to stick together as a community and defeat it by ourselves.

Take care, EJA88
