I am back after months of a relapse. I know I have been here before but I need to stop gambling or risk losing my life. It’s driven me to the point of no return. If I don’t stop I am going to lose everything I have. I just need to take every day by day but one thing for sure, I must stay away from gambling in every way as I don’t know when to stop. Had my debt paid off now back to square one chasing my loses and I did a few times but yesterday broke me. Need to get back to the gym etc to help my mental health. It’s done now but can’t let it affect my future. Any support would be most appreciated.

Good choice! You have made the right decision. If we had a way of controlling our dopamine levels better we could most likely have a better mechanism of coping than we do. We see losses we chase wins to cover them and if we gamble and win we get an urge to loose it all again because we want our dopamine levels even higher than when we won the last time. Did you know that you get a bigger high from almost winning than the winning it self? The actual win is deflated to you as an addict unless it is higher in value than the one you were getting last time it made you excited.

Fact of this is that we are compulsive impulsive and non thinking till we have to think about getting more money. It is the rat race no one wants to be in and can often be referred to as being in hell.

Now getting out of this takes some deeper thinking. Who are you? What has happened to you to bring you here? What is making you happy and what is making you sad angry or depressed. A very high % of addicts have some kind of underlying trauma. Do you  know about yours? Have you spoken to someone about it?

Start peeling back the onion and get to know you. Because when you do is when changes starts to happen.

We can not do these things alone. We ALL need help and that means communicating with others. You will find good support here but make the phone call to gam-care and talk to an adviser. They can help you to find the phone nr and webpages that you will need to get more help lined up for yourself.

And try and be kind to yourself from today. Millions of people out there are or have been addicted. It is not a new thing and you are not the only one carrying this problem around. That means that you forgive yourself when you are sunk in self loathing and hurt. You will get out of this . You will get better and you need to make that pledge to you and to all that care for you.

I wish you well!

Best

C
