this is my 8th day gambling free and i feel like a different person. its a shock to me to realise how much money i could have had if i never was so wreckless. ive got support from my girlfriend to help me and she is amazing, id urge anyone who is going alone to tell someone as that is the first step to recovery.

i have recently just started a new job in the last few days and my mind has been focused on that, i have had no time to gamble and still feel the same as i did on day one. the weekend was another big tester for me early on in my road to recovery, my friends also like to gamble but are sensible and control it. being around them at the weekend the conversation always comes up at some point and they dont think i have properly quit so are always asking me about it and what i am betting on etc. i like the fact that i have not ignored it all together and can still talk about it and be in the room when people are talking about it as i feel it tests me to see if i'll break and each time i resist it i feel more confident and better about myself to never do it again.

I have also moved your post to the Recovery Diaries section of the forums, as this might be a more compatible place for your curent Diary post.

today will be my 14 day gambling free and it is getting slightly easier as the days pass, it still come into my head and people keep taking about it around me. i need to stay strong minded, i can do this. i have taken steps to prevent myself from relapsing such as closing all online accounts, banning myself from the shops and handing my finances over to someone to ensure i dont do it. changing my mindset and approach to life as they all have an impact.

Hi Dylant

Well done in staying strong although you've been around people who talk about gambling. I always found it helpful to shut off from the conversion should it arise. Keep it up!

Hi Dylan, it sounds like you're doing great. Keep it up. As time passes, complacency will become your biggest issue, so just do whatever you can to keep reminding yourself how bad things can get with the addiction and how you don't want to return to that place.

Hi Dylan,

It might be worth calling the GamCare helpline/netline for some advice and support or just another place for you to talk things over. The service is open every day from 8.00am-midnight.

With best wishes,

Helen

Hi Dylan - there is some advice, firstly financial and then about gambling.one financial issues are caused by gambling! Gambling won’t solve them. So first advice is speak to stepchange charity about you’re debts - they will talk through budgets / affordability and even stop int etc. This will put you in better place financially. (Help your mind etc). Then to stopping gambling! Ensure self exclusion/ gamblock / never carry cash / hand over finances / tear up cards this will help to stop you gamble when you get the urge. These are simple practical things you can do now that will help in the early days, hope this helps Jappy
