Recovering from gambling addiction starts with acknowledging the issue and seeking help. Professional support, like therapy and support groups such as Gamblers Anonymous, can offer valuable guidance. Managing finances effectively—such as limiting access to money and setting strict budgets—can prevent further gambling. Additionally, finding new hobbies or activities can help replace the urge to gamble with healthier behaviors.
Everyone’s path to recovery is unique. What strategies have worked for you, or do you have any tips for others looking to overcome gambling addiction? Your insights could be a great help to those in need.
Key for me was to change my routine. Gambling was very much planned into my day. I had to totally change this. Phone not with me at key times, something else to occupy my mind when I used to gamble.
Changing your mindset is vital. You don’t need to gamble at set points. There is plenty of other things to do. Gambling is a habit. Habits by their nature are habitual! Change the habit, change the problem.

I'll be coming close to 6 and a half years this november and I found this really worked for me. Now please take this with a little pinch of salt as I was rock bottom.Â
- Accepting I had a problem. This came on the floor of my kitchenÂ
- Realising that I had a lot of unresolved trauma that manifested my diseaseÂ
- Gamblers fallacy. Draw the line, it's lost. But you have found lifeÂ
- DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. If you find something that really works, like peer support and gamstop/ gamban , adhere to what works bestÂ
- There's going to be a lot of hard work ahead, but trust me, life really is beautiful and you will do amazing things with it.Â
If I can help and if you want to shoot the breeze, we are here for you 🙂Â
What worked for me was cutting out having my own bank account. I did need someone to liaise my everyday expenditure but not having a bank account has enabled me to go more than one year without gambling so far.Â
