Can modding tools lead to compulsive behavior similar to gaming or gambling?

I’ve been reflecting on how certain tools in the gaming space—like partial game launchers or modding utilities—can sometimes cause people (including myself) to spend excessive amounts of time tweaking rather than playing. I came across a project called a <a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener">mod-focused launcher that’s widely used in one particular gaming niche, and it got me thinking…

Is there a point where constant optimization, cosmetic modding, or "trying to make things perfect" starts resembling the kinds of repetitive loops we associate with problem gaming or gambling?

Would love to hear if anyone else has struggled with this kind of compulsive loop or found helpful ways to set boundaries.

Hello Roman4487,

Thanks for sharing this as a topic of discussion – it’s interesting to hear your reflections and questions, particularly on the possible impacts of using these tools repetitively.

As with gambling, if you’re noticing that it’s becoming compulsive to use the tools, and other areas of life are starting to become negatively affected, this would be a good time to think about how you could help yourself feel more in control again. It’s great to hear you’re thinking about how to put boundaries in place.

We sometimes refer to the ‘gambling triangle’ tool as a way of helping reduce gambling and this might be helpful for you to think about. We’d encourage you to reflect on how to reduce your use of the tools you’ve mentioned by looking at three areas (like a triangle): money, time and access.

If you’re worried this area of gaming is becoming more harmful to you, it might be worth getting in touch with The National Centre for Gaming Disorders if you live in England.
