I sat with my son today and his girlfriend having coffee, he came out with this...
” I had £40 on 2-1 Liverpool last night, gutted”
now ive seen him bet a few quid on his betting app £5 or so but this freaked me out.
he has a good job, amazing fiancé but he is 24 and has decent money, now you know what I’m worried about eh?
ive never ever done or talked about gambling around him, both my kids I’ve never ever encouraged or mentioned it, so do I check him? Do I warn him ? Do I mention it to his girlfriend to keep an eye on him.Ive told him to not gamble.
i know not everyone is a CG , I don’t want him hurt.
thoughts?
Evening,
I too have a son who gambles on sporting events via an online account. As he no longer lives at home it is difficult to keep tabs on him.
I did have a word with him a couple of years back and he is 100% aware of my previous slot machine gambling.
He too is in a relationship and infortunately all i can do is give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that he does not go down the same route as me.
I was a controlled gambler for many years but after the death of his mum i became a cg.
All we can do is trust and advise.
Best
If it was £40 once a week or twice a week, as long as he can afford it, I don't think that is a problem.
He has (presumably) been honest with the size of his bet and been open about betting. You don't want to come down hard so he can't be open in the future.
Maybe say;
1) you really should be putting that £40 towards a house deposit & a talk about how much he can save a week, alongside maybe putting the money in a help to buy ISA (with a 25% bonus)
2) I'd slip in how much I hate the fact that gambling adverts saturate sport.
"it matter's more when you have a bet on it".
Does it s***e !
It basically spoils the enjoyment of it, and makes the bet important than the game.
The reason some are reluctant to give up sport is that some events do bring the family / friends together (lets say your national team playing in the World Cup). The bookies are cancerous leeches trying to suck the enjoyment out of those occasions.
Thanks pal, my other son puts small bets on via an app too, I know where they get it from ...the tv adverts cos they haven’t got it from me.
small bets have become bigger ones, I know everyone doesn’t end up with a problem , maybe I’m looking too much at it.
Affected by gambling?
