Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has had any success in claiming back bank charges from the cycle of gambling/debt rinse repeat?

Although I know that this mess I have got myself into is entirely my fault it frustrates me that most banks seem to turn a blind eye while we rack up debt. I have not check yet but I am assuming that my charges would run into the thousands.

Steve

Nope ! afraid not , I don't believe Bookies do refunds either :)) .

Unless you could prove the banks were in some way negligent of course by allowing you to take your own money or that which you borrowed to gamble with in the first place ? .

Probably best to just put it down to experience and focus on your recovery .

All the best mate .

Hi Steve.

As you come to terns with a complex and confusing addiction your frustrations will be misplaced especially in the earlier days of recovery.

Banks make money from charges and in no way do they think they could get away with telling us how or how not to to use our money. They would probably love to tell us how to use our money but have worked out that lots of overdue charges equals lovely lolly for them.

I agree that any statement full of online gambling charges should ring warning bells. I find it odd that unsecured lenders like credit cards and payday loan companies would tolerate any form of mentioned gambling or on statements. Its just a flag warning that the borrower is being dangerously irresponsible with money....Their money!

You could of stopped me is not a case that will hold up in court as gambling is legal

I was addicted I didnt want anyone else knowing and especially the bank. I was a secretive gambler and would draw out cash. Its interesting that I would try and hide my activities and I knew not to have linked gambling transactions on the bank records. That must be because I felt it was wrong or shameful and Im not wrong there.

I remember when I was gambling, the red mist set in when I just wanted my money back from the machine...almost like a refund...the indignant crazy thought of just pay me my money back then...thats all Im asking. A complete refusal to accept the odds or the risk. I would never have walked away happy anyway. It was never enough because depressed compulsive gamblers have an ill relationship with money

So you must focus and use your thought systems to accept the money has gone . Its the only way forward as those that chase end up far deeper down the slope to complete destruction

Best wishes from everyone on the forum

To be fair. I completely accept that my situation is my own doing and my own only.

However as you said it seems mightily irresponsible that banks and other lenders seem to turn a blind eye to this problem. Gambling seems to be such an integral part of sports marketing too nowadays and the government does not seem to have any interest in tackling the matter.
