Hi mrs-m,
Not sure what you mean. Do you two hold a joint account ?. A joint account from which you can arrange an overdraft or authorized borrowing when you can choose to do but not your partner ?. Am I wrong or are you considering switching his debts into your name ?. DON'T DO IT, a CG must understand the debt incurred by compulsive gambling are HIS not YOURS. To bail a CG out gives him/her a safety net that tells them if things get unmanageable they can always slip the debt onto someone else & repeat the same destructive behaviour.
Protect yourself, your home & your future by distancing yourself from your partners debts. Anyone on here CGs or their partners will tell you NEVER hand a CG a bail out. Ask for transparency, evidence of his bank transactions, passwords, and tell him in no uncertain terms that you need to see evidence of him seeking help through Gamcare or GA. You can also check credit referencing reports. Look out for any additional credit cards, loans etc. recently taken out in his name.
Sincere Best Wishes

I personally use Starling at the moment which works well for me. You can easily set a gambling block on the card and all transactions are easy to see. It allows you to have the app on different devices so I have it on my phone and my good friend has it on their phone also so they can see my finances anytime. At the moment it is set so he gets a notification anytime I make a payment or transfer any money to/from the account. It can be a bit annoying for both of us to have him notified every time I buy a coffee etc. but its definitely been a game changer for me in my recovery. Â
This doesn't stop me from opening an account with another bank and requesting a loan/overdraft though. I'm not sure if there's a way you'll be able to stop that but others might have some ideas. Â
@cerrry93 Hello. Thank you, this is very helpful to know. I shall look into this.
@slowlearner Hello. Thank you for your concern. I am not taking out anything in my name, no. It was about whether there were cards around such as the one described in the comment below. Many thanks.
