My 43 yo brother has had a horrible few years with one thing and another which ultimatley ended up with the mother of his children committing suicide last year and leaving a note saying how it was all his fault and that his gambling and drinking was too much.

He has always liked a tipple and bet however over the years it has got worse and worse.

He functions fine, has a great job, earns lots of money and has a new wife with a new daughter, however yet again it all came to ahead this week when his wife finds out from bank statements he has lost over £8000 over the past few months (money which he got as a result of his previous partners suicide)

The biggest problem is he is so frecking pig headed, always has been since we were kids he just wont listen.

He is driving my/our parents to an early grave and no matter what they do he just says everything is ok and he will sort it out, makes a joke of it an carrries on.

It has got the to the satge where they have tried everything and have asked if I could try and help, so I am pleading for advice on how I shouldapproach talking about his problems and persuading him he needs help. He is totally against getting help but it is the only way I can see him saving his marriage, relationships, job ect.

Any help woudl be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi there,

I very much feel for you and the other family members in such a taxing situation.

Perhaps you have already read the advice on our site for 'partners. friends and family' under the heading of 'Support and Counselling'; but, in any event, you are very welcome to talk things through with a GamCare Advisor (via the Helpline (freephone) or Netline..

I can sense the depth of the frustration caused by your brother's apparent reluctance to front up to his situation.

It willl be a good starting point for him to contact us and he can feel assured that our chat with him would be respectful and non judgemental and that he would, hopefully, find us easy to talk to...even if he is not quite sure what he wants to do or say.

We understand that for him to tackle his gambling might have to be a 'one step at a time and one day at a time process' - ,perhaps leaning heavily on us in the beginning. But that is fine. It may well be that we can also point him towards free professional counselling. I should add that the one to one counselling provided by us and our partners is also there for partners/family members.

Kind regards,
