Hi just joined today and I am hoping with as much support as I can get that I can now turn my life around. I don't know how I got to where I am but it has been over many years and I have chased every lost £ so am now about £80,000 in debt. I am determined to pay back every penny and kick this addiction/problem right out of my life.

You will get very good advice on debt management from charities such as Payplan or Stepchange. Just make sure you approach a free to user service such as these rather than one who will charge you.

Thank you Lethe I will look into that, unfortunately this is not the first time I have been in this situation and I feel so ashamed of what I have done again. I promised the last time never again if only it was that easy.

It's never easy Madish. Take it one day at a time just get through each day at the start. Definitely look into your debt problems as soon as you can and make sure you have the blocks in place with little access to money . Keep posting .

I wish you all the best

Hi Madish - hope you have someone to support you? Urge you to get Gamcare counselling - I felt unable to go to GA so one to one counselling was best for me. I have said before gambling is like quicksand and you really need someone to help you out of the quagmire. Take care.

Madish nice to meet you phil here . I'm almost ready to push the button on a debt management plan I have however held back as I'm also looking for advice ? In your case doing the research I have says you could do an IVA and clear your debt in 5-6 years paying a fraction of what you owe . Speak to payplan they're really good and understanding . While I'm on here what's do people think my best choice is ? I owe 22000 I have almost agreed a dmp but part of me is thinking should I not take a home owner loan to clear the debts ? I know this is turning unsecured debt to secured but my mortgage is due for renewal at the end of the year and I'm worried if I take the dmp will I struggle to get a fixed rate mortgage ?

I know the answer will be yes the mortgage will have to stay on the VR once the 5 year fixed ends but atleast I will save the damage to my credit file !

Hello Nights

Looks like you're looking for financial advice. Are you already getting formal advice? You mention PayPlan so I'm guessing you are. If you're looking for a second opinion you could try National Debtline, Stepchange or your local CAB. It's a big decision.

If anyone here responds, remember they can only speak from their own experience. This forum isn't a place to get formal fincancial advice.

Nights and Madish, I hope you both get good advice and get on the road to recovery from both debt and gambling.

Best wishes

Forum Admin.
