hi,
Looking for pointers of the best places to get advice and help.
I'm getting worse and worse and despite placing time outs, etc on the online sites there seems to be little you can do to get help to stop. Blocking software is no help when you are full admin. I need to take control. I'd appreciate people's thoughts and help.
Thanks for listening
Hi Kh and welcome to the forum :))
Have you considered councilling through Gamcare or just talking with an advisor as a first point of call ? .
There's lots of options but ultimately it's about you finding some willpower to stop gambling as any form of blocking is temporary and can be got around , it works because it affords us some time to think about placing that first bet ?.
What about looking at way's to limit your access to funds ? Handing over financial control to a loved one or someone else you could trust , or report your card lost and scratch off the 3 digit security number when the new one turns up but without remembering it of course .We don't know your full story so it's difficult to give much advice , do you have a partner and dfoes he/she know ? have you told anyone else about your problem , parents ?
Hey Alan,
I do have a partner and she does know, to an extent. I only have my mum, and I wouldnt want to tell her, she would be so upset, and I wouldnt want to do that. I havent talked to the councillers, just trying to find my way round things in the first instance.
I think it is really bad that there is little controls out there to help you out. I will start by keeping a calendar of days I don't gamble, and keep popping back on here for advice and support.
🙂
Hi again K ....................... Maybe think about starting a recovery diary ? you'll get a lot more input from other forum users and it also has a Day counter which can help , there are controls we can put in place and there is a fair bit that can help you but we have to take the responsibility of putting those measures in place ourselves ................. We put a lot of effort , time and money into our gambling setions so we put half the effort into stopping it will be time well spent :))
Alan, is that something I can find on here? Thanks for your replies.... K
Hey K :)).
If you mean about the Diary's ? Then all you need to do is go into the main forum's page and scroll down and click on Recovery Diaries Page then scroll to the bottom of the page and cliock on new topic , you can set your page up from there :))

Hi Khurley12. I just wanted to wish you all the best and ask how the past couple of days have gone for you?
Hi K, I am new also.
Read as much of the forum as you can. It helps seeing others recover from similar situations.
The family and friends section helped me as it shows it from an outside perspective and how much it can affect others around you.
Hi all,
Thanks for your replies. I am trying to self exclude from website, but they do not make it easy. They are like, what are your login details. Some I no longer know. They try and make you go on to exclude! It really is awful that it is so hard. You should just be able to register your email addresses and that is that. .. blocked for good.
I shall have a look around, as you all suggest, and look at the diaries... I failed last night and managed to get back on... very stressful job / life at the moment. Have a drink and gambling is hard to resist. Seems I need to give up drinking as well... What an uphill battle.
Thanks for all your support
Hi K
You have come to the right place to get help. If you have any problems with self excluding etc don't be afraid to ring the helpline on here and they may be able to give you some advice. Also, you mentioned having a drink and gambling. You have brought up an important point for everyone reading your post. Having a drink, or maybe too many drinks, is very often when the gambling starts. Our gambler who we have been helping has openly admitted this so there must be something in it. In our experience since the alcohol has been cut back things have improved. If you are not quite sure how to go about things get a pen and make a list of things to do i.e.:
ring gamcare with any questions like self exclusion etc., advice on where to get financial help
read through each section on this site to and you will see you are not on your own,-
maybe start posting in the recovery section where you can keep a diary of how you are getting on
make today day 1 of not gambling and keep ticking off the days - maybe set yourself a target of days to aim for.
You will start feeling better in yourself once you put some of this into action. Good luck.
Affected by gambling?
