Hi All
I am new to this site today as I need to move forward and try to stop gambling.
I am 37 years old and have gambled for as long as I can remember but have found that over the past 4 months this has became excessive and I have wasted thousands of pounds on online gambling after my sister won £10000 from a scratch card win online.
I have tried to stop doing this on several occasions and failed miserably and am sick to my stomach that I am now in £1000 debt that I am not able to find a quick fix for.
My partner knows that I have been doing this but not to the extent that I have and has bailed me out financially before. I am now waiting to have that discussion tonight to tell him that things are worse and I now need £1000 to clear my debt because of gambling.
I am scared that I will do it again when I have cleared this and hate the hurt that my partner will feel tonight as I promised I would stop before and how much more he will put up with.
I guess I am just looking for as much help and support that I can get to get rid of this demon.
You did find the right words. A demon. I am in a position of your husbent in fact. I dont know the answer. But never stop asking for help and never stop being sincere, as he will never cross you anymore. Dont lose hope, but most of all, dont make him lose hope. Convince him and show him you are asking for professional advice, just for him and your self too. But If you need not to lose him, you should be sucesfull and never get tired of asking help. Its not that I am a specialist. I am as scared as you are and wish it will never happen to you again.
Hi Christine1702, welcome to recovery 🙂
I think having the discussion is vital but reading threads on here, it is better that he doesn't bail you out as this is just a green light to keep damaging yourself!
You have to draw a line both under the money you have lost & also under the could have beens! We cannot win because we cannot stop but we can win by stopping! You need to get your Time-Money-Location triangle broken because removing one takes away the ability to gamble & I suggest blocking software (K9 is free but Gamcare can advise you if you give them a bell) may well help with this! Failing that, you may need to hand your finances over to a loved one! Having plans in place to prevent this in future will hopefully give your husband the confidence to support you 100% which will make recovery that bit easier! Gamcare offer support for loved ones if he needs it!
