I gambled to escape the loss of both my parents and I can cope with why I became horrifically addicted. I do still often struggle with the vast amount of money lost, including inheritance money and savings which would have allowed me to buy a house. At least I am still working but few know the dark secret of huge losses. People often talk about saving for a deposit around me etc. In the back of my mind and often when I’m alone I think... Jesus I could have bought a house outright. How do I deal with those thoughts. Becoming a saver not a spender ? More counselling? I’m aware these thoughts only drag me down and maybe I should just celebrate being alive !

Hi @cj1974,

Welcome to the GamCare Forum and for sharing your post.

Firstly, I am sorry for your loss of your parents and it is understandable that gambling became an escape and a way of coping, and acknowledging that is really important. Many people gamble as a form of escapism or to fill a void as a way to switch off from life and the struggles within it, so you are not alone.

Letting go of the money is not easy, however it is a key element to the recovery journey and can allow you to experience a different way of thinking and living. It can be used in a positive way and sustained motivation for your journey away from gambling. This is why it is crucial that you start making some changes in your routine and lifestyle because that’s what recovery ultimately is – a complete lifestyle change.

The forum is a great place for peer support, and as I’m sure you will find out, there is lots of advice, support and encouragement to help you with your journey.

Should you be in need of any further support with your recovery, please feel free to contact the helpline on 0808 8020 133 or via our live chat available from the website https://www.gamcare.org.uk/get-support/talk-to-us-now/  both of which are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day and where one of our advisers will be able to talk, for as long as you need, and look at all the support available to you.

Wishing you all the very best and keep sharing,

Kind Regards

Dan

Gosh cj I feel the same, my income is low and I have saved up 6k so far but unfortunately home ownership seems so far away just as much as trying to rent a place too. It’s not a good day for me today but yes I guess it’s good to be alive.
